Radlett CC 3rd XI v Watton-on-Stone on Sat 15 Aug 2009 at 1.00 p.m.
Match was Drawn
Match report
Given that Radlett never looked remotely like winning this match, they did well to get a draw and 16 points from it. That they did was mostly due to an excellent and chanceless 90 not out from the evergreen Colin Warne.
The rest of Radlett’s performance was variable in the extreme. Watton won the toss and batted, and took 71 wicketless runs off the first 11 overs. After 20 overs the score was 120, and Skipper Edwards turned to Shamit Nathwani and Dom Ingram, probably out of desperation. Taking the pace off the ball and assisted by some very sharp catching, the score slowed and wickets fell. Edwards, Rob Willis and Nick Tune took very good catches, but the fielding deteriorated at the end, allowing Watton to reach 249, probably 20 runs more than we should have allowed.
Shamit finished with 3 of the 6 wickets to fall, an excellent performance. Radlett have only twice reached 200, so 250 to win, even on a good wicket with a swift outfield, was an outside bet. Even having reached 49 at 6 an over for the first wicket, wickets fell regularly, and it was Warne who was the central pillar of the innings, even smashing two fours and a six off the last over to eke out two extra batting points.
Those two points keep Radlett marginally above the drop zone, but they will have to win at least one of the last three matches, none of which is a pushover. Yesterday Radlett performed very well at times, but abominably at other times. Yet from facing 130 for no wicket, the Thirds actually showed a heartening degree of fortitude to get something out of this match. We will need all of that mental strength in the next few weeks, and perhaps not rely on just one batsman, to stay up in the Fourth Division, which means there is still all to play for.
