Match report A rare victory at the coin toss saw Radlett take the field in this lower table clash. The visitors started solidly before Jacko claimed the first wicket, this was quickly followed by a catch behind off Hemang Majeethia. 'Herman' was playing his first game for the thirds and put in a tidy spell, beating the bat on numerous occasions. He was replaced by another third team debutant, Kushal Patel, who claimed a lbw victim with his very first ball, the remainder of his spell was aggressive and he obviously has natural talent in abundance. Hyde's innings was built around a patient and controlled innings by their skipper, who eventually perished for 72. Unfortunately, he was dropped twice early in the piece (once by yours truly) which proved costly, as although they never fully got on top of us they managed to pace their innings effectively to reach 220-8 from their 53 overs. Jacko was at his combative best, bowling unchanged and claiming a commendable 3-76 in the process. Shameel Ahmed bowled at the business end of the innings and claimed two deserved victims. Apart from the said dropped catches the fielding was pretty decent. Our reply stumbled early with the loss of Belly and Jacko, but a breezy and entertaining partnership of 72, in excess of four an over between Shamit Nathwani (37) and Kushal (46) put us back on track. It was a pleasure to watch as both youngsters hit the ball cleanly and punished anything loose. However, both batsman fell in quick succession and some momentum was lost. When Robin Willis was out for a handy 24, 72 runs were needed off the final 9 overs and the opposition were sensing victory. Radlett were not to lie down and the skipper, with excellent support from Kailash Morjaria, Shameel Ahmed and Josh Charles who's running between the wickets and general cool-headedness (not sure whether that is a proper word?) under pressure is mighty impressive for someone so youthful, collectively got us extremely close to what would have been a crucial 30 points. And had it not been for a dubious late run out decision and the penultimate over consisting of only 5 balls when 15 runs were needed, we may well have sneaked it at the death. As it was, 8 points was of meagre consolation. Hopefully this young side can step up a further level next week, as with only seven games of the season left, five wins and some favourable weather is probably going to be necessary if the thirds are to perform a 'great escape' and avoid the drop to division five.
