Radlett III creep over the finishing line against High flying Hertford II at a boiling Balls Park.

Iain Edwards had the novelty of playing his selected team, which meant a bowling attack where 20 year old Neil Lederman was the old boy. A flat track beckoned and Hertford had been saying that 250 was a par score on the track, which admittedly had not been cut on Friday owing to an unfortunate accident involving the groundsman who cut his finger off with a band saw and was having an operation on Saturday afternoon. Radlett wishes him well.

The youngsters responded to Edo's requests to get stuck in and Daniel gets a wicket in the 1st over with the aid a super Wells catch to remove Captain Riddle who has scored over 500 runs this year. At the other end Leders built pressure by bowling 26 consecutive dot deliveries and allowed Daniel to remove the dangerous Benford for 0, again thanks to Wells catching ability. How this helps the III's having Wellsy in. Daniel managed to get the useful Gilbert out with a beauty that was well caught by Dom.

After Daniels spell, Edo turned to Shameel who bowled with flight and guile and at a slower pace than he has been and he got some grip and control, allowing Neil to bowl with venom. Neil snared the youngster Marques after a fighting 13 with a beauty snared at gully by Dom and Sham forced the big hitting Eaton to hole out at Mid Off to Daniel. Leders kept going for 14 overs in the heat of the day and deservedly got Carlson with a wonder delivery that jagged back and Josh took a fantastic catch behind the stumps.

All this time Watson was accumulating runs slowly but surely and Dan returned to remove Tooth caught by Belly at mid on and the obdurate Brazill was undone by a beauty to give Daniel his first five wicket haul in League cricket.

Yasir was brought into the attack late (he did everything late today!!!) and removed Watson for a very good 63. 129 all out was not going to be enough, or was it?

Dom and Belly opened up and Brazill bowled 6 consecutive maidens as we failed to knock the ball around, to keep the scoreboard moving. Young leg spinner Carlson looked dangerous but bowled one bad ball an over and allowed the scoreboard to tick. Dom went for 9 and Hardain was adjudged LBW, by Birdy, for 0 and suddenly thoughts of UHH OHH arrived.

Enter skipper Edo, looking more determined than I have seen for a while to play a real captains knock and see it through with a well paced and fighting 49*. He mixed aggression with sensible defence and well judged running. Edo found a good ally with Kailash who was belligerent from the off and scored a quick 19 before holing out to Cooper. Jamie was undone by a Cooper yorker and we were again staring down the barrel. Yasir carried on where Kailash had left off and smashed a couple of fours before falling to the impressive youngster Carlson, who claimed his 4th wicket. Sham came in and eased Radlett to a victory by supporting Edo and striking the winning run denying Edo his 50!!!

A good victory over a very good side, but we need to kick on and carry on if we are to ease away from the bottom of the table.

Man of the match Iain Edwards for his 49* and his sensible and calm captaincy, although Daniel Cohen must come close.

Radlett 3rd XI v Hertford 2nd XI 4th July 2009

This Radlett 3rd XI was described yesterday as “last year’s 4th team”. If that is the case they played above themselves to chalk up only their second win of the season against high-flying Hertford 2nds.

The prime reason for this vital win was good bowling and catching. Dan Cohen took an excellent 5 for 50, but was helped by an excellent opening bowling performance at the other end from Neil Lederman, who took 2 for 35 but if anything bowled better than Cohen. Shameel Ahmed who chipped in with a couple, and Yasir Sayed was rushed out of bed to join the team, and bowled cleverly at the end.

This was underpinned by some good catching, notably two early half chances skilfully pouched by Jamie Wells, who was thoroughly tired from breast feeding his baby daughter most of the night. These were two eminently missable chances that set the team up for an excellent performance in the field, with Dan Cohen taking another very difficult catch.

Set 130 to win, we did make a meal of it, losing 6 wickets in the chase, but solid contributions from the sveldt Kailash Marjoria and Matt Bell were cornerstoned by a proper captain’s innings of 49 not out, Eddo’s highest of the season. It is no surprise to your author that when he bats up the order he makes runs. That was important yesterday and will continue to be important for the rest of the season. Number four is where Iain Edwards must bat; anywhere else is to waste his talent.

This was a bubbly performance from this 3rd XI, a joy to partake in, with the wisdom and humour of the older players mingling with the raw enthusiasm of our younger players, most of whom have come up via the Youth Teams. Very healthy organic growth that bodes well for the future.

In the meantime it is this “4th team” that will have to reproduce this standard for the rest of the season to keep us in this division. No reason why not.
