Match report Radlett 3rd XI v Hertingfordbury (away) 27th June 2009

Another defeat for Radlett in which we were badly outplayed. For much of the game we looked in with a shout, but a dreadful period where our bowling was toyed with in the second half of Hertingfordbury’s innings displayed a gulf in class in batting. And yet had their top batsman fallen to one of two hard chances, we might yet have at least forced a draw, or even, well, who knows?

Hertingfordbury elected to bowl on this sunny day, and for the patern of the last two games prevailed with a good start. Dom Ingram again played a solid but unspectacular hand while at the other end first Shamit Nathwani then Vishal Patel hit the ball entertainingly hard and frequently, scoring 30 a piece. These two are strokemakers who are not afraid to hit the ball in the air.

Thus at 98 for 1 and travelling at nearly 4 an over, we looked set for a score of 220, which would have really been par. But when Ingram again got himself out needlessly, wickets fell regularly. But this time Robin Willis propped up the middle order with a beautiful 40 at a run a ball. He hit some memorable strokes, and now that he has staked out his area in the side, and has gained some confidence, he could really make the difference in this batting order.

With Colin Warne making hay at the end of the innings we reached 196 for 9 from our allotted 53 overs. Better, but still not quite fit for purpose.

The two young quick bowlers Neil Lederman and Dan Cohen bowled very well indeed, beating the bat with the new ball. But after a scorching catch by Robin Willis, Hertingfordbury were 60 for 2 with a low scoring rate, and we felt in the game. But when the opposition batsmen became set they did much as they liked, and following some mid-innings carnage, finished off the game barely seconds before the heavens opened, so we couldn’t even manage a draw.

Difficult times ahead for the Thirds as we prop up the table, but we are capable of winning matches, and a couple of victories would do wonders. The fat lady is still only limbering up.
