Match report
Radlett 3rd XI v North Enfield (home) 20th June 2009
Another defeat for the Thirds leaves us at the bottom of the league, and a worrying gap starting to open up above us.
This was a poor performance, where a solid start of 64 for 0 became 85 for 6. We scraped along to 148 all out, leaving ten overs unused which we charitably gave to the opposition, leaving it even easier for them.
When we bowled, there were too many half volleys, and North Enfield gleefully accepted them, winning comfortably by 5 wickets.
Nowadays we are urged to “look for the positives”, which is what I thought you did when you put the batteries into your calculator. There weren’t many, of course.
Openers Dom Ingram and Matt Bell gave us a good start, with Bell playing fluently and crisply, outscoring Ingram threefold. They got out in quick succession, with Bell’s excellent 47 better than a run a ball. Thereafter the middle order was pathetic, with only Shamit Nathwani having cause for complaint, having been stumped in a freakily unlucky way.
Captain Iain Edwards with an encouraging 20, and the return of Zed “The Beaver” Gitay with an exuberant 37 in his first game of the season, took the score to respectability. But only just, on this easy batting wicket.
Simon Jackson as usual gave his all, and Dan Cohen, Shameel Ahmed and Robin Willis tried hard to exert pressure, but their batting colleagues have got to give them a proper target to defend, or the margins for error are just too small.
Colin Warne took an excellent catch behind the sticks, and was otherwise very competent, as usual, and Jacko rearranged the cranial structure of one opposition batsman, but otherwise North Enfield were happy to take the game that we gave to them.
If we don’t stop being the league’s whipping boys, we will be playing with a different set of teams next year.
