Radlett CC Lost by 2 wickets

Match report Radlett 3rd XI v Chipperfield Clarendon (away) 13th June 2009

Radlett lost their fifth of seven games yesterday. Again the batting was at fault, totalling a meagre 150. The fact that the margin of defeat was just 2 wickets is hard to take, indicating that just twenty more runs might easily have brought a much needed win.

If the batting was poor, the bowling was good, and the fielding sensational. The ground fielding was led by an outstanding performance by Dinesh Yogendra, and although two sharp chances were missed, Matt Bell took three catches at slip, one sharp, one just excellent, but the first barely even a half chance. But underpinning and even instigating this showing was Josh Charles’ superb wicket keeping. He was energetic and precise, and gave his best keeping display of the season, and his enthusiasm is infectious. And at his age and stage of experience, there is better to come.

We lost the toss and were put in, and the scoreboard ticked over healthily until Matt Bell was lbw for 21. Momentum was lost, but at 90 for 2, the foundations were laid, but our middle order failed and we subsided to 150 all out in the 53rd over. Only Dom Ingram with 54, and later Arif Rahman with a bumptious 23 threatened to worry the bowling. Ingram’s half century was significantly the first for the team this season. It was a solid effort after a very scratchy start, which he grafted out to become almost fluent. But he lost his wicket unnecessarily, and after he went there was little left.

Defending 150 proved tough while Chipperfield’s tall Australian thrashed the bowling to all quarters brilliantly, until Shameel Ahmed had him well caught by Ingram in the deep, and the game was back on.

Yasir Sayed took three wickets in two spells, and was well supported by the increasingly threatening Dan Cohen and Robin Willis who bowled well without luck. Arif Rahman, in his debut for the 3rds bowled his left arm seamers well and picked up a wicket. With his batting ability Arif is a very useful addition to the side.

The game might have been even closer had a run out from which the umpire was unsighted, been turned down. Yet the spirit never waned, and the effort was unabated.

Iain Edwards leads this side expertly, and has managed to put back the enthusiasm from the nadir of the Baldock game. This shows in the 3rds obvious enthusiasm and enjoyment during matches. But until he is given the luxury of a decent total from his batters he will always be on the back foot.
