Match report
Radlett 3rd XI v Southgate Adelaide 6th June 2009
You can’t win a cricket match if you drop seven catches. Radlett did and they lost. Had they caught these catches, they would have won the game comfortably.
This is galling, not only because Southgate Adelaide, a nice bunch of lads though they are, do not have a better side than us. Yet they are third in the league and we find ourselves second from bottom.
The second galling thing is that our ground fielding is good, and in past seasons we have prided ourselves on our fielding and catching.
We lost the toss and were put in to bat on a wet pitch and, as seems standard, lost three early wickets. Again as usual, Ingram provided stability, while Simon Jackson applied the long handle effectively, and Oz Edwards looked belligerently comfortable.
But it was Tony Peck, drafted in to the side late, who showed us all how to bat. He waited for the bad ball and defended the good ones. Without his top scoring with 49 we would not have got near a total of 162, which despite not occupying all 53 overs, looked at least defendable.
Our bowling was good enough to win the game, but our catching wasn’t, and we lost by 3 wickets, which must have particularly difficult to take for Jacko, Dan Cohen, Ross Carpenter, Shameel Ahmed and Robin Willis, who all bowled well and kept trying the whole game.
Indeed, where we might have almost been excused for giving up given the sickening regularity of spilt chances, the spirit remained commendably upbeat.
It will need to be, because it looks like this season may be a struggle.
