Radlett CC 3rd XI v West Herts II on Sat 30 May 2009 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 2 wickets

Match report A template is beginning to emerge in the 3rd XI which previously has been a primeval slime. From the dreadful humiliation of last week’s six of the best against Baldock last week, the worst of some awful performances this year, Radlett pulled off a win.

It was narrow, just two wickets, but deserved. It involved hard work that was not shirked, and has elicited some interesting new personalities.

The game consisted of W Herts winning the toss and on a good wicket electing to bat, a decision, which, like us, exhibited a lack of confidence equivalent to our current performances. We bowled well, while their opener made a dramatic 60-odd from the first 90. But once he was gone, we bowled well enough to limit them to 156 all out on a seemingly blameless strip.

Although not faultless, the fielding was good enough, with two good catches pouched by the now less than svelte but none the less totally whole-hearted Simon Jackson, back after two years’ family duty, and a staggering one-handed catch by skipper Eddo Edwards. We had the good fortune to have Colin Warne behind the sticks, who, even though he made mistakes, probably gained us 25 runs more than any other keeper.

Of the new generation, Daniel Cohen has come of age as a genuinely threatening bowler at this level, and perhaps there is more to come. Hemel Malde, in the first game I have seen him at this level, took 3 for 27, the pick of the bowling figures, and not undeserved. He also fielded with verve and skill, and is hopefully here to stay.

Shameel Ahmed bowled his off-breaks with poise and talent, and alongside his underrated batting talent, this makes him a first choice for this side.

Jacko bowled off his rustiness to genuinely worry the batsmen. He will always be an asset to any of our teams, and we hope he can be available frequently.

157 from 51 overs became a difficult target only when we lost 3 wickets for 20 runs. Jacko entered, hit his second ball for six, and continued, bringing the score to 80 before he went for 37. Dom Ingram showed his old adhesiveness, and with Shameel batting with remarkable poise, and Oz Edwards displaying his vast experience and talent, Radlett got the runs with 8 wickets down.

This win, narrow and nervous though it was, exhibits a sea change in commitment and performance, but we will have to maintain this level to stay in this division in 2009.

And well done lads.
