Baldock v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 23 May 2009 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost by 155 runs

Match report Here are the statistics: Baldock scored 224 for 6, declaring after 47 overs. Radlett were bowled out for 70, having used up half of their 53 overs.

This Baldock team were 5th from bottom of the league. No giants. The disgrace was compounded by the fact that we played the game with ten men, plus one who could not field; not his fault.

I can’t remember having been so humiliated after such a pathetic display of pusillanimous feebleness. A clue to this performance might be that when were batting half of our team was upstairs in the clubhouse watching the golf on TV.

Twice this season we have started and played with ten men, which I cannot remember before in a Radlett 3rd side. The result is that morale is on the floor. Half the side don’t care, so why should the captain take the full burden. He feels, quite rightly, badly let down, and is reluctant to take any more punishment. Why should he?

This time last year we were in the same position in the table, but at least we had tried. This time it really is serious, and I feel it likely we won’t be rescued by really good players moving down to help us out.

If this trend continues, my feeling is that this time next year, not only will we be playing a league below, but that there will be a real shift, ending in the club fielding one less league team.

Players who do not turn up should be refused membership. If that means we have less players then so be it, let’s have less teams. The quality of players is not solely defined by their cricketing ability but their understanding that this is a team game. It is small wonder that we can’t find people daft enough to captain the sides at the beginning of every season when they have to give up their time mollycoddling a bunch of selfish kids whose only interest is their average.

Radlett has a history to be proud of, and in its 125th year I feel we have forgotten some of the principals that made it so.

Please prove me wrong.
