Radlett CC 3rd XI v Northampton Exiles on Sat 16 May 2009 at 1.30 p.m.
Match was Drawn

Match report This was a battling and much improved performance by Iain Edwards troops against a very good Exiles team, who have won their last 9 games including the end of last season.

I must make special mention of good performances from Asad Hussain who bolwed a good opening spell without luck and Daniel Cohen who showed he is ready to play regularly at a higher level this year with a very good opening spell and then a controlled spell at the death. Sagir Nazir bowled a lovely long spell and helped keep Exiles down to 209. Shameel continues to impress with the ball.

To keep Exiles down to209 after an opening partnership of 120 was excellent.

However it is with the bat that the two major awards go to Shameel Ahmed and Toby Sutherland who put together a match saving partnership of 76 in 19 overs when it lookedlike we would succumb. Shameel batted sensibly and with ability for 24 and Toby showed courage and patience in making 33. He should have been 33 not out but had a slog off the last ball of the match.

Lets take heart and start the upwards climb of the table.

Thanks to Geoff Bird and John Lawlor and Tony Cohen and Peter Guilbert for umpiring and scoring in the freezing cold!

Dom's Report:

Radlett were thoroughly outplayed for the third time in a row, but this time showed the character to get away with a draw. Northampton won the toss and batted, making 209-5 from their 53 overs. This actually constituted a decent effort from the Radlett bowlers on a good batting wicket. At 115 for no wicket, a score of 250 looked probable. But with sensible controlled bowling backed up by some committed fielding, the opposition never really got away, and at tea we felt we were in with a shout.

Bad batting let us down again, and we were reduced to 72 for 7 with 20 overs left. Toby Sutherland was then joined by the young Shamil, who both showed real character to save the game, and we finished on 148 for 9.

Although the defeat was avoided, and a good deal of character was shown, both in the rearguard batting action, and some brave bowling and fielding, there might appear to be serious defects in this team.

Are we not good enough for this division? I don’t think so, because the three sides that have outplayed us were not worlds better than us. We had a dreadful start to the season last year but finished strongly, but much was due to much better availability, and we must not rely on that this time. We just need every player to play to his potential.
