Match report After yesterday’s heavy defeat and dreadful start to the season, I feel like the bloke with déjà vu and Altzheimer’s who said “I think I’ve forgotten this before.”

The best word for this game was “abject”, and although nowadays we are urged to look for the positives, it’s difficult. Well, nobody died, and the whole team are free of Swine Flu.

We batted badly, and bowled inconsistently and without real threat. Thus we failed to put Harpenden under any pressure at any time. We played the game with ten men, which is bad enough, and when we started to lay a basis for a batting total, we gave our wickets away, including an inexcusable three runouts.

We were bowled out, on a good batting wicket, for 137, after 50 overs, where a minimum of 200 would have been a par score. Ingram top scored with an adhesive 38, and Eddo Edwards looked good before giving a catch on 25. But it was Josh Charles, the young wicketkeeper, who caught the eye at the crease, scoring 23 with some cultured and powerful shots. He would surely prosper from batting in the top six.

Harpenden knocked off the runs with embarrassing ease, losing only two wickets, and scoring at better than six an over. To be fair, the opposition batting, at least those we saw, looked very competent, but were never tested.

The fielding throughout the side was of a good standard, Toby Sutherland, a vastly underrated player, bowled, batted and fielded well without any luck, Oz Edwards was always competitive everywhere, and Ash Hussein bowled with pace, and beat the bat.

Shameel Ahmed bowled his spinners with skill, but, like Neil Lederman, without a total to defend, was hamstrung. Sagir Nasir played one cracking shot for four then ran himself out, which was unfortunate. And it’s good to have Dinesh Yogendra back, who looked rusty at the crease, but still fielded athletically and is someone you want in your side.

So while there was no shortage of endeavour, there was a tangible rustiness and lack of nous. We have to fight for every bit of advantage, then fight to keep it, and we didn’t.

Last year we had an awful start to the season, but aided by some very strong sides later in the season, regained confidence and finished strongly. We can’t rely on a few big players coming in to rescue us, we must work with what we have.

Things can only get better, can’t they?
