Northchurch v Radlett CC 2nd XI on Sat 22 Aug 2009 at 12.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 6 wickets

Match report .
The weather for this match was dry, with sunny intervals. A light breeze blew lots of small clouds from the West mid-wicket boundary to the East. The pitch, unused previously in 2009, had short, straw-coloured grass. A few small, circular bare patches showed where repairs had been made necessary because of digging by birds and squirrels, but otherwise, the pitch was in mint condition.

NCC's captain, Ali Fantam, was unable to play due to an injury. One of their usual opening bowlers played, but was not able to bowl. Nick Fielden won the toss for RCC, and asked NCC to bat.

Play began at 12:30 hr, half an hour earlier than usual, to permit the usual duration of a match before the arrival of darkness. NCC's opener played the last ball of Johnson Mafa's first over sharply down towards gully. David Robinson leant forward to take a very good catch close to the ground. NCC 0 – 1. Stuart Browne began from the other end with three consecutive maidens. NCC scored slowly, reaching 13 – 1 at the beginning of the 13th over. Johnson claimed a second victim later in this over, and Stuart took his first wicket in the next over. NCC 15 – 3 from 14 overs.

NCC continued to score rather slowly, with Stuart bowling particularly economically. For over 19, Johnson gave way to Lee Fortis, who continued the good work. Stuart took his second wicket in over 20, having conceded only 8 runs from his 10 overs up to that point. Lee joined in with a wicket during over 25, when NCC's score became 41 – 5. He was replaced by Atul Sachdeva for over 29, and the NCC score began to increase more quickly, reaching 74 – 5 after 36 overs. However, Atul's next five overs yielded all of NCC's remaining five wickets. They all fell to catches, including three batsmen who were caught and bowled. Stuart, who had bowled unchanged at one end for the whole innings, conceded only 27 runs from his 22 overs. Extras were B 4 LB 6 NB 6 W 0.

RCC obtained 10 – 5 = 5 bowling bonus points from this innings. NCC gained no batting bonus points because their run total was less than 140. The permitted length of RCC's innings was increased from 47 overs to 55, since NCC had left 8 overs unused from their allocation of 53 overs. Atul's spell of tempting slow bowling had ended the NCC innings at 15:17 hr, slightly earlier than might have been expected. This saved RCC from a possible penalty for bowling its 53 overs too slowly.

In the event, tea was not quite ready, and NCC proposed that the RCC innings should begin before the tea interval began. In reply, RCC quoted the League match rule 1a), which includes the provision that tea shall be taken between the two innings, Law 15.3(b), which requires an interval of 10 minutes between innings, and Law 15.7(a)(i),which states that if an innings ends when 30 minutes or less remain before the agreed time for tea, then tea shall be taken immediately. This discussion was resolved in RCC's favour, not least because a delicious tea was actually ready to be served at about 15:30 hr.

Lloyd Paternott and Nick Fielden opened RCC's innings at 15:53 hr. They looked secure, but Lloyd fell LBW at the end of over 3. RCC 12 – 1. David Robinson and Nick continued at about three runs per over until over 20, when Nick (32) was bowled with the score on 66 – 2. Felix Walker took his place, but David (27) sportingly walked two overs later, without waiting for the umpire's verdict. (After the match had ended, the umpire said that he would not have given David out. The loss of this wicket must therefore go down to bad luck.) RCC 69 – 3. John Barr arrived to partner Felix, and they quickly took the score to a tie at 109 – 3 before John (21) was caught at the wicket during over 28. The scoring rate for this partnership was about 5.4 runs per over. Nish Selvakumar, batting at No 6, scored the winning runs with a confident drive to deep extra cover.

RCC obtained 30 points for their win, and NCC obtained 4 bowling bonus points.
