The weather at the start of this match was dry, with a mixture of shade from small white clouds and sunshine. There was no significant wind. The pitch was well mown, slightly green, and was softish on top. The grass on the outfield was long enough to slow the ball somewhat when it was hit off the square during the game. Reed, who were promoted from Division 2 to Division 1 at the end of the 2007 season, and relegated from Division 2 at the end of 2008, seemed likely to provide keen opposition. Nick Fielden, Radlett's captain and No 2 batsman and David Robinson, Radlett's usual No 3 batsman, were not available. Stuart Browne captained the team, won the toss, and asked Reed to bat. So far, so good.

Johnson Mafa and Stuart opened the bowling. Johnson took the first wicket at the end of the 9th over with the score on 21. He induced an edge from Reed's lefthanded opener, with wicketkeeper Nish Selvakumar taking an excellent left-handed diving catch. After 15 overs, with the score at 43-1, Stuart took himself off in favour of Lee Fortis. Stuart's analysis at this stage was O 7 M 2 R 12 W 0. Johnson took his second wicket in his 10th over, having Reed's No 1 LBW with the score on 62. He bowled two more overs before handing over to John Barr. Johnson's analysis of O 12 M 1 R 56 W 2 included a total of 9 No Balls.

Lee Fortis took Reed's 3rd wicket at the start of Over 30, after 113 minutes of playing time, with the score on 108. At this stage, Radlett's over rate looked slower than that required by the League. Felix Walker replaced John Barr for over 31. His first over of off-spin saw Reed's No 3 reach 50 runs, but Reed's No 5 departed two balls later, caught at a total of 124-4. Stuart Browne bowled over 37 himself, promptly taking the wicket of Reed's No 7. This freed Felix to resume bowling at the other end in place of Lee Fortis. The bowling combination of Stuart and Felix continued for the rest of the innings, gradually improving Radlett's over rate in the process.

Stuart took Reed's wicket 6 at 171 from a catch by Felix Walker, and Reed's wicket 7 at 173, courtesy of an very good catch at long on by Johnson Mafa.
Reed's No 3, Chris Jackson, completed an unhurried century in the 52nd over in 149 minutes from 118 balls. Felix, with a catch by Lee Fortis, collected Reed's wicket 8 with his last ball to make the score 199. Chris Jackson reached a well-deserved 107 before falling to a second excellent catch by Johnson Mafa on the long on boundary in Stuart Browne's 16th over, the 53rd of the innings. He was well supported by Reed's later batsmen, even though they did not score many runs themselves. Stuart's figures for his very successful second spell were O 9 M 1 R 17 W 4.

At the end of the first innings, Reed had obtained the maximum possible (2 x 5) = 10 batting bonus points, while Radlett had achieved (9 - 5) = 4 bonus bowling points. Radlett had managed to complete their allotted 53 overs within the three hours allowed, so suffered no penalty for their innings. Their target of 207 runs to win from 47 overs, a scoring rate of about 4.4 runs per over, or 0.74 runs per ball, looked to be within the capability of a strong, confident batting side. So far, quite good.

Unfortunately, Reed's opening bowlers were quick and accurate, and Radlett's openers found that run-scoring was a slow business. James Lewis (9 runs off 22 balls) was bowled in the 7th over with the score on 12. Felix Walker (39 runs off 55 balls), 1st wicket down, achieved a personal scoring rate close to the desired value before falling at 72. Lloyd Paternott (22 runs off 71 balls), Radlett's No 2, was 3rd out at the start of over 27 with the score at 83. By this time, Radlett needed 124 more runs to win from slightly less than 21 overs.

This target of 6 runs per over increased the pressure on the early middle order batsmen who followed, and they were not able to mount a sustained challenge before they were dismissed. The later middle order batsmen coped reasonably well with Reed's change bowlers, but again could not score at the rate required for victory. They survived for only a few balls after Reed's opening bowlers returned to the attack. Radlett's tail crumpled in a similar manner. With 6 overs left in the innings, Radlett's score was 129-5. Reed's opening bowlers needed only 20 of the 36 remaining balls to take the last five Radlett wickets at a cost of five more runs. Stuart Browne was Radlett's not out batsman.

In defence of Radlett's tailenders, Reed's pitch points roughly East to West, and the low evening sunshine shone fully in the eyes of Radlett's West facing batsmen. In addition, the fate of Radlett's later batsmen casts a more favourable light on the performance of Radlett's earlier batsmen.

In summary, the better side won. Reed were a stronger side than the team which Radlett were able to field against them. Reed's bowlers did a better job of bowling at Radlett's batsmen than Radlett's bowlers did against Reed's batsmen. Reed obtained the full 30 points for their victory, while Radlett did not add any batting bonus points to their four bowling bonus points.
