Northwood v Radlett CC 2nd XI on Sat 25 Jul 2009 at 12.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 10 wickets

Match report .
From one mid-wicket boundary to the square, Northwood CC's ground slopes fairly noticeably. The square itself, and the other half of the outfield, slope away more gently towards the opposite mid-wicket boundary. NCC uses a sheet to discourage rainwater from wetting the pitch. NCC does not have covers for the pitch, on the grounds that rainwater falling on the higher ground would run underneath any covers, and wet the square anyway.

Saturday's match was played at the end of NCC's cricket week. The pitch chosen for the game had seen recent use, and subsequent repair. The sheet had done a reasonable job in keeping out most of the rain from the heavy showers which had fallen in the preceding days, but it looked quite green. Later events showed that, initially at least, it was quite lively, with a rather unpredictable bounce.

The weather for the game was dry, with sunny intervals. Felix Walker had been selected for the RCC team, but did not travel with the side, nor make his way to the ground separately. After phone calls by Nick Fielden, it turned out that Felix was not actually available. After more phone calls by Nick, Shabbir Foyez was recruited to the cause, and began his journey to Northwood.

Nick won the toss for RCC, and invited NCC to bat first. Since Shabbir was still on the way, the game began with only 10 RCC players. Johnson Mafa and Stuart Browne opened the bowling. Each took a wicket in his first over, so that NCC had reached 1-2 at the end of the second over. Johnson continued to bowl effectively, achieving impressive speed and lift, and taking two more wickets in his first 11-over spell. Stuart went one better, bowling an amazing nine maidens during his own first 11 overs, and taking four wickets at a personal cost of 5 runs. By this stage, NCC had collapsed to 36-7 from the first 22 overs, while Shabbir had arrived, changed, and taken the field.

John Barr took over from Johnson, and NCC's captain and No.4, Simon Noach, and their No. 9, another James Lewis, began a determined stand for the 8th wicket. Atul Sachdeva replaced Stuart at the start of over 30. He began with two maidens while the score moved from 70-7 to 72-7. Lee Fortis replaced John Barr, and broke the partnership with his fifth ball, trapping Lewis LBW with the total at 77. Atul continued with his third and fourth successive maidens, picking up the wicket of NCC's No 10 on the way. He conceded one run in his fifth over, before finishing things off by taking the wicket of NCC's No 11 with the third ball of his next over, the 40th of the innings.

RCC took a total of seven catches, including three by David Robinson off Stuart Browne's bowling. Extras were B 10 LB 1 NB 7 W 1. Five of the no balls came from a single delivery which beat the batsman, all of the fielders and the spare fielding helmet before crossing the longer of the two behind-wicket boundaries. Johnson Mafa deserves particular credit for avoiding any front foot (or any other) no ball problems for a second week running. RCC gained five bowling bonus points, and an extra 13 overs to add to their normal allocation of 47 in which to score the 97 runs needed for victory. NCC did not register any bonus batting points.

Atul Sachdeva and Nick Fielden began RCC's innings cautiously. NCC's opening bowlers were quite economical, but did not obtain the same help from the pitch as RCC's bowlers had done. NCC's change bowlers proved expensive as Nick and Atul began to increase the scoring rate. A change of ends for NCC's opening pair made little difference, and RCC moved effortlessly from 95-0 to 100-0 thanks to a final delivery which contributed five wides to the score.

RCC got 30 points for the win, while NCC gained no bonus points at all from the game.
