Radlett CC 2nd XI v Luton Town & Indians on Sat 18 Jul 2009 at 12.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 1 wicket
Match report
The weather at the start of this game was dry, with some sunshine among a host of flufy white clouds. The pitch had a greenish tinge, due partly to rain earlier in the preceding week running downhill under the covering sheet, and partly to sweating under the cover adding to the dampness. Stuart Browne, acting captain in Nick Fielden's absence, won the toss and decided to field first.
James Knott, son of Alan Knott, former Kent and England wicket-keeper, and Jeremy Page opened the LT&ICC batting. They made rather slow progress against RCC's opening bowlers, Johnson Mafa and Stuart Browne. In his fourth over, Johnson bowled James Knott with the score on 20. The LT&ICC innings continued sedately through a number of bowling changes, reaching 22-1, 48-1 and 74-2 after 10, 20 and 30 overs respectively. Stuart Browne (0 for 7 in 7 overs) and Lee Fortis (1 for 10 in 7 overs) were particularly economical. Atul Sachdeva helped to improve RCC's over rate by bowling his slow leg breaks. With wickets in hand, LT&ICC began to score more freely, reaching 114-2 in 40 overs and 151 in 50 overs, but losing five more wickets (four of these to Stuart, one to Atul) in the process. LT&ICC's score at the end of their allocation of 53 overs was 172-7. Extras (B 18, LB 1, NB 1, W 1) totalled 21.
LT&ICC collected 2 x 3 = 6 batting bonus points, while RCC obtained 8 - 5 = 3 bowling bonus points. RCC succeded in bowling their 53 overs within the League's time limit of 3 hours, thus ensuring that their own innings could occupy the maximum 47 overs allowed by the match rules.
With the light beginning to dim because of the increasing cloud cover, Atul Sachdeva and Lloyd Paternott opened RCC's innings. Unfortunately, they both fell cheaply, together with John Barr, leaving RCC's score 26 - 3 after 10 overs. David Robinson and Nish Selvakumar then rebuilt the innings to 96. Nish, trying to force a ball to leg, then became the second of RCC's four batsmen to be dismissed LBW. David Robinson achieved a solid 50 in over 40. Hardain Nandhra reached a steady 22 before also departing LBW at 148 - 6 during over 41. 25 to win from 6 overs, four wickets remaining.
In the gathering gloom, things then became hectic. In the next over, Lee Fortis played a ball towards gully. David Robinson called for a very sharp single, and set off for the run. He was sent back by Lee, who was initially facing the wrong way. Despite David's emergency stop, followed by a 180 degree turn and desperate sprint back, he was run out by a clear margin. 149 - 7, 5 overs and 4 balls remaining. Johnson Mafa was caught behind during over 43 with the score at 153, and Ben Charles took his place. 20 runs needed from 4 overs and 3 balls, two wickets left. Lee and Ben's partnership added 14 precious runs before Lee (14) departed at over 46, ball 4. Six needed to win off eight balls, one wicket left, LT&ICC feeling rather pleased and hopeful.
Enter Stuart Browne, looking thoughtful. He played one ball defensively, then walloped the last ball of the over to the wide long-off boundary by the machinery shed for 4. Two to win from six balls, one wicket standing. Following a Browne/Charles conference in the middle of the pitch, Ben defended the first two balls of the final over, then hit a perfect off drive, all along the ground, to the other wide long-off boundary for the winning four. So RCC won a close, thrilling game by a single wicket, with only three balls to spare.
The game was played in an excellent spirit by both teams throughout the match. RCC received 30 points for the win, and a rather disappointed but sporting LT&ICC added 9 well-deserved bowling bonus points to their 6 batting points for a total of 15 points. Rain began to fall shortly after the game ended, and a 45-minute time shift could easily have caused an abandonment.
