Broxbourne v Radlett CC 2nd XI on Sat 02 May 2009 at 12.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 9 wkts

Match report For their first Saracens Hertfordshire Cricket League Division 2 game of 2009 on 2 May 2009, Radlett 2nd XI visited Broxbourne to play newly-promoted Broxbourne CC 1st XI. On a dry afternoon, Nick Fielden won the toss and asked BCC to bat. (This decision entitled Broxbourne to double any batting bonus points which they might obtain, and meant that Radlett would not gain any bowling bonus points until they had taken five wickets.)

Radlett's opening attack of Stuart Browne and Johnson Mafa, a newly-arrived South African cricket coach, bowled very economical opening spells of 12 and 8 overs respectively. As usual, Stuart's bowling was very accurate, while Johnson looks very quick. Stuart and Johnson were followed by Lee Fortis and David Hegarty, who also kept Broxbourne's scoring rate down. The early Broxbourne batsmen defended confidently against most of the balls which they received, but they were not able to score freely, the score after 40 overs being only 76 for 5. Later in the innings, Ben Rosser, the Broxbourne wicketkeeper scored 63 not out from only 48 balls, but the total after 53 overs was only 165 for 8.

Johnson Mafa finished with 4 for 43 from 14 overs, while Stuart Browne took 1 for 32 from 17.3 overs. (Stuart was not able to finish his 18th over due to a slight strain - David Hegarty obliged by bowling the remaining three balls of that over as the start of his own second spell.) Lee Fortis took 2 for 24 in his spell, including a very athletic return catch from a drive passing about 3 yards to his right hand side.

Radlett took more than the permitted 3 hours to bowl their 53 overs. The umpires applied the league match rules, and offered Broxbourne the choice to bowl either the full 47 overs when Radlett batted, or a reduced total of 45 overs. Broxbourne chose the reduced total, thus restricting slightly Radlett's chances of scoring enough runs to win the game.

There were a number of loud appeals for front leg LBWs from the fielding side during both innings. The two neutral panel umpires, Murray Carlson and Peter Bradshaw, rejected all but one of these appeals. Some of the others did seem to be rather optimistic.

Simon Randall and Nick Fielden opened Radlett's innings. They scored steadily at about 4 an over until Simon was out for 14 in over 8 with the total on 31. David Robinson then joined Nick. Their partnership maintained the scoring rate of about 4 an over. David reached a well deserved 50 off 51 balls from the first ball of over 24, by which time Radlett's total had reached 101. The partnership continued to the winning total of 167 off 34.1 overs, by which time Nick Fielden had scored 52 off 93 balls and David Robinson had scored 88 off 85 balls, both not out, of course.

This convincing win gives Radlett the maximum 30 points possible from the game. Broxbourne receive a total of 5 points - 2 for reaching 165 runs while batting, doubled for being put in, and a single bowling point.
