Radlett CC 5th XI v Southgate Adelaide III on Sat 11 Jul 2009 at 1:30pm
Radlett CC Won by 109 runs

Match report Tom Clare hit his third fifty of the season for Radlett V as they destroyed Southgate Adelaide III by 109 runs at Queens School Bushey.

Though this was only the third win, the distance from the fourth promotion spot was narrowed to 65 points, suggesting that a number of teams, including Radlett, could go up with a sequence of good results in the second half of the season.

Radlett clocked up an imposing declaration of 223 for three after Clare, dropped at slip pushing forward sleepily to the first ball of the day, had motored onwards to 61 and Bhavin Kakkad had weighed in with a 61-ball fifty. Clare's knock took his season's run total to 360, and no fifth-teamer has yet reached the 400-run mark in the 21st Century.

Radlett fielded probably their strongest team this year against perhaps their weakest opponents to date, though the job had to be done, and a draw looked likely in thickening drizzle when Adelaide were four wickets down. But the rain suddenly stopped, Charlie Randall took three wickets in one over and victory was secured with five overs remaining. Newcomer John Phipps caught the last man, calmly holding a rasping drive from a Pete Wharton full toss at short extra cover. A good finish with a soapy ball.

Radlett, having been put in to bat, started with a brisk 63-run opening partnership between Clare and Ender Tahsin, a feature being some slick running between the wickets. Kakkad helped Clare add 81 in 13 overs for the second wicket and then the left-hander climbed into some shaky back-up bowling to finish with an attractive 76 not out. Phipps, relishing the idea of not commuting from London to Hereford each week for his cricket, survived a scratchy start to hit a quick 25.

After a halfway declaration Adelaide made a slow start against some excellent fast bowling from Hemang Majeethia, another debut player. He broke a determined opening stand, and John Mansell took the next wicket when Joe Wharton held a startlingly good running catch off a skyer. Sam Kutner used his five overs well, moving the ball enough to worry the batsmen and fully deserving his two wickets. Randall and Peter Wharton worked their way through the middle order and tail to complete a handsome win.

As with the other lower sides, good availability will be important for the fifths to increase competition for places and to give youth players worthwhile experience. And upward movement in the table would follow naturally.
