Radlett CC 5th XI v Watton-at-Stone II on Sat 04 Jul 2009 at 1:30pm
Radlett CC Lost by 100 runs
Match report
A youthful Radlett V lost by 100 runs againt Watton on Stone seconds in Division 11 when a very poor batting display ruined a respectable effort in the field led by Phil Simmons' quick, accurate fast bowling.
A team containing five 17 year-olds showed up well in the field on a hot day, but chasing a total in adult cricket proved beyond them when they mustered only 30 runs between them. This was a pity because there was plenty of ability.
A flat pitch and lightning outfield persuaded skipper Charlie Randall to field first, and Simmons struck a commanding length straight away with two wickets in a pacey first spell. Most of the runs conceded flew through the slips third man area towards the short boundary.
Ben Lederman, 14, bowled a typically tidy spell with a good action and should become an excellent adult cricketer. Sohaib Rehman found a good rythm in his seven overs and Sam Kutner moved the ball off the pitch, but most of the afternoon was spent trying to keep the lid on a Watton fifth-wicket stand of 98. Tipper was dropped long before he reached 89 and captain Waite survived an easy early run-out, so Radlett made life difficult for themselves. An intelligent second spell by Simmons kept the final total down to a very reachable 199.
A veil could be drawn over Radlett's reply, which started with an opening stand of 26 in five overs between Tom Clare and Marcus Freeman. But then slow left armer Clayton bowled Freeman with his first delivery and bowled Josh Hirschowitz with his next, both batsmen pushing defensively down the wrong line. After that double blow the innnings simply fell apart. A bland surface allowed plenty of scope to regroup, but Radlett's inexperience left Clayton with six wickets and Watton easy winners.
