Match report Radlett V started their Division 11 season with a six-wicket defeat by Pirton at Queens' School. They could hardly expect success confidently after a struggle to field a full team, though Andy Griffiths added strength with same-morning availability when his tradesman failed to show up at home and he top-scored.

A weak batting line-up against a good village first team managed to make 144 on a good pitch, and the score would have been higher if only one more upper order batsman had shown more resolution, rusty or not. Radlett bowled well enough, especially Peter Wharton, to have made life difficult with 20 or 30 runs more.

Makeshift openers Giles Walker and Marcus Freeman removed the shine and Griffiths continued a useful start with an excellent 46 before miscuing a pull shot to midwicket. Scott Hubball hit 28 on his debut, including a driven six into the tennis courts, but from 91 for four, the score quickly became 110 for eight. A stand of 28 between skipper Charlie Randall and Brendan Jones took the score to a reasonable level before a direct hit ran Jones out.

In reply Ben Lederman, 13, struck with the new ball in a promising debut, and Wharton sent down 18 overs in succession without much luck, though 2-48 was a good return. Pirton had 47 overs to bat and played steadily to made sure of victory. They were made to fight for every run by a good Radlett effort in the field, and unusually weak home side achieved 10 points, a respectable return.
