Hemel Hempstead v Radlett CC 2nd XI on Sat 25 Apr 2009 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost by 4 wickets

Match report On 25.4.09, RCC 2 XI helped to inaugurate Hemel's new, two-storey pavilion. Some minor work remains to be done, but both bars, the changing rooms, the kitchen, etc are functional.

Despite early morning rain, the pitch and outfield were dry by the start of the game, and no rain fell during the match, a 45 over friendly. Nick Fielden won the toss, and chose to bat. Ashley Tillett scored a quick 27 off 35 balls before losing his wicket with the total on 41. At the other end, Nick Fielden made a steady start, accelerating later to finish with 50 runs from 97 balls in just over two hours. He was well caught by Hemel's Matt Petchell, head high on the long on boundary, off a drive which otherwise would have carried easily for a six. Nick and Mike Crocker shared a 3rd wicket stand of 80 runs in 58 minutes. Mike's 44 runs came from 79 balls in 69 minutes. Shamit Nathwani's 22 runs not out came off only 17 balls.

The table below shows that RCC's bowlers were more economical than HHTCC's for practically all of the game.

Overs bowled......RCC total.........HHTCC total
10......................39-0..............17-0
20......................68-2..............59-1
30......................110-2.............87-2
40......................145-3.............136-3
41......................153-4.............141-4
42......................154-5.............142-5
43......................162-5.............148-5
44......................167-5.............167-6
44.4........................................173-6
45......................172-7

Unfortunately, Hemel's John Graves swept three successive 6s over the mid-wicket/square leg boundary off the last three balls of over 44, leaving a target of only 6 runs for victory from the final over. This was achieved with two balls to spare.

The result is an example of how a side batting second can pace its scoring rate to win, provided that it has strong, determined batsmen at the crease at the end of the innings.

RCC's fielding was generally tidy, although two catches were dropped, and a sharp throw at the stumps for an attempted runout was not backed up in time, allowing an overthrow boundary.
