Sunbury v Radlett CC 2nd XI on Sat 18 Apr 2009 at 1.00 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost by 86 runs
Match report
Radlett turned up at Sunbury on a beautiful sunny day with 9 men, 1 umpire and 1 scorer. Before I go on, I must thank David for his umpiring, especially as he had to both ends for 90 overs(!) and Bill both for his scoring, and then ensuring all the details were correct - this taking all the way until Tuesday!
So, 9 vs 11 was on course until Sunbury said that there were two players who had been waiting for a colts match and they were lent to Radlett for the game.
After numerous drop-out's - including that of captain TJ, JB and Robbo took the reins. JB won the toss and elected to put Sunbury in. Sunbury's Matt and JB opened up the bowling, with Matt bowling very well and JB knowing he owed umpire David a pint or two for not calling him wide in his first over. JB beat the bat with some beauties despite some wider deliveries mixed in too. In his second over, JB bowled a beauty to Darren London, brother of Middlesex batsman Adam, that was nicked off and second slip DC had been moved wider by Hegs and couldn't make the catch. Matt bowled a nice spell from the other end picking up a couple of wickets. Dan and Shabbir came on to replace them both bowling nicely with Shabbs picking two cheap wickets. Hegs and little-Leders then came on with Roland-Jones taking a particular liking to Hegs hitting him for some huge slog-sweep sixes. Roland-Jones batting exceptionally well with some incredibly clean hitting and he accelerated nicely from beginning to end. After little-Leders and Brendan, SCC's Ross came on to bowl taking two wickets and also taking a catch. One of his wickets was the SCC 2nd XI captain who didn't look impressed! Based around Roland-Jones' 108, SCC scored a competitive but achievable 206.
Tea followed and there seemed to be an endless amount of sandwiches and chocolates. In the bar next door, Aston Villa vs West Ham was being shown from Italian Eurosport with beatiful Italian commentary...
Following tea, Radlett's opening pair of the returning David Hegarty and talented batsman-keeper Ben Charles set about trying to hunt down the 206. Unfortunately, Ben, Hegs and David Robinson all fell cheaply leaving Radlett in a precarious position, but still not completely out of sight. Captain JB and SCC's Matt built a partnership until Matt got caught, quickly followed by JB and then by Shabbir. At this point, RCC were 60-6 with Brendan Jones and Dan Cohen both new at the crease. They set about playing themselves in and seeing how close to the target they could get. They ran hard and pressured the fielders with lots of leg-byes, byes, quick singles and twos. Brendan and Dan got the score to 100ish when Brendan was caught and bowled by the very talented young left arm spinner A Hughes. Dan followed quickly edging the off spinner to slip for a hard-fought 12. Ross followed quickly and this left Ben Lederman and Lee Greenland together. Lee batted very nicely and looked very assured at the crease and looks promising and should be playing regularly this year if available.
Radlett finished their innings with one ball remaining with a run out to Leders.
There were a few good individual performances but Radlett were outplayed by a talented Sunbury side, who have very nice facilities and a very nice ground. Played in a good spirit and fun was had all round.
Onwards and upwards from here!
