Radlett CC 1st XI v Potters Bar on Sat 29 Aug 2009 at 10.30 a.m.
Radlett CC Won By 2 wkts
Match report
Kushal Patel announced himself to the HCPCL with a mercurial 37 not out and fiery opening spell that confirmed him a rising star in Hertfordshire cricket. Captain Shane Burger won the toss and asked Potters Bar to take first use of what looked to be another belting wicket. 15 year old Patel took the new ball with the captain and immediately impressed, asking questions of each batsmen who came to the crease. The youngster bowled with pace, swing seam and subtlety and was unlucky to only finish his six over spell with one wicket. The Potters Bar batsmen were visibly pleased to see him retire after only 6 overs under ECB fast-bowling regulations.
The visitors rallied after early setbacks with former England A-spinner Shaftab Khalid and Northants Academy prospect Will van der Maat adding a useful 90 run partnership before Khalid lost his head and ran past one from the in-form Paul Barker. Radlettt’s fielding in recent weeks had befitted a side safe but with little to play for and unfortunately that attitude continued into this match as catches were dropped and runs slipped through the field. The bowlers efforts did not get the support they deserved and the captain will be looking to address this again with his players ahead of the Herts County Cup final and the last league match at relegated Farnham Royal.
Potters Bar’s innings ended on 234-9 with van der Maat finishing on a well-constructed 82 not out. Again Radlett would have been disappointed with the amount of runs leaked, but confident all the same, after the record-breaking partnership between Kabir Toor and Leo Sandino-Taylor the week before versus Oxford. Credit should go to the captain for a superb spell which gave him figures of 18-8-43-4 well assisted by Heath Paynter’s 17-3-34-2.
The reply could not have got off to a worse start with Toor going in the 2nd over to one of the most erratic bowlers in cricket history. Sandino-Taylor set off from where he left off v Oxford and was soon dominating the visiting attack. Jenkins got to 14 before he played around a decent delivery from Sikander and the next ball the Pakistani seamer produced a jaffnasty to rip out Fakir Dungaria’s leg stump first ball. Andre Sharma weathered the hat-trick ball and set up rebuilding with Sandino-Taylor. At tea Radlett were 82-4 and victory looked a long way off. Sandino-Taylor cut the first ball after the break for four to bring up his fifty and then proceeded to destroy McGee and looked to hit him out of the attack. His next 41 runs came off only 17 balls, all from the wily left-armer and the opener seemed set to bring up a rapid hundred when he chipped the ball to cover for an excellent 73-ball 89 including 13 fours and two sixes.
Sharma then stepped up to the plate keeping the score ticking over with help from Barker (15) and Shil Patel (11). With 60 to win from 12 overs, Sharma was joined at the crease by Kushal Patel. The two with a combined age less than Heath Paynter produced one of the most enjoyable partnerships and showed that whatever happens Radlett’s future is in safe hands. The 15 year old, who’d already starred with the ball, played one of the great HCPCL cameos which culminated in hitting the leagues leading wicket taker Khalid for two huge sixes, one to win the game with the evergreen Paynter open-mouthed at the other end. 25 points secured and a great confidence booster ahead of the Sunday showdown at Shenley.
