Radlett CC 1st XI v Henley on Sat 11 Jul 2009 at 11.00 a.m.
Match was Drawn rain won again
Match report
For the second time this season Radlett were denied certain victory by a downpour from the heavens. With 33 runs needed in 7 overs with Shane Burger and Andre Sharma looking like they could get the runs blindfolded, torrential rain decided to appear and end the game.
Henley's batsmen did well to post 238 with most of their top order contributing in the face of a wonderful display of bowling from all the Radlett bowlers but in particular Paul Barker (2-58), Kabir Toor (3-66) and Heath Paynter. A special note of praise should go to Barker who had not had too many opportunities with the ball this season, but bowled a miserly spell that helped keep Radlett's nose ahead throughout the day. Some wonderful fielding, in particular from debutant Sharma meant that Henley finished 30-40 short than they should have been. Rain interrupted the innings throughout and both sides did well to keep concentration through the breaks.
At the hafway stage Radlett were confident and rightly so. Toor and Leo Sandino-Taylor both opened up their accounts with boundaries, but both fell in the teens to bring Indian wizard Fakir Dungaria to the crease to join Tom Jenkins. Jenkins then proceeded to middle everything in sight. If the fielders hadn't have got in the way, he'd have scored a 25 ball hundred. As it was he fell for an excellent 50 meaning that Burger and Dungaria had to rebuild. 'Faxy' then played an innings of true genius to get Radlett within sight. His sub-continental background providing some huge entertainment as he flicked and sliced the ball to all parts of the ground. His was a batting masterclass.
Even when he went and debutant Sharma came to the crease, the free runs did not let up. Burger began to savage ex-Leics spinner Crowe and the victory looked certain until the rain. Were it not for the rain in this match and at Potters Bar, Radlett would be sitting in 2nd place confident of winning their first HCPCL title. As it is Radlett are slightly off the pace but still confident of keeping in touch and hoping that more luck comes their way in the second half of the season.
