Radlett secured 25 points for the first time this season with a truly comprehensive victory over local rivals Welwyn Garden City. Cobden Hill was looking magnificent on a wonderful summers day and when visiting captain Aaron Laraman won the toss he decided to bat first on a wicket that looked worn and was thought to break up and turn considerably later on.

Middlesex’s Gareth Berg took the new ball with captain Shane Burger and both players showed why when bowling together they are the best opening combination in the HCPL. They kept the WGC openers under constant pressure, continually beating the bat and were rewarded with the wickets of Blacktopp (16), Hewitt (10) and Baker (1).

The game ebbed and flowed with wickets and run coming with equal success for both sides, but the introduction of Robbie Crocker seemed to turn the game in Radlett’s favour. After two loose overs, he settled in to rip out the WGC middle order including the dogged Laraman (78) and finshed with figures of 4-52.

Some agricultural hitting from Raymond Hodge (40) towards the end would have disappointed Radlett as WGC managed to add 48 for the last wicket. 240 was certainly a score that would have pleased the visitors, but with the wicket holding together and little sign of the anticipated assistance to the spin bowlers, Radlett were confident.

The signs look ominous though when Radett lost Toor (1) to a good catch by Blacktopp standing up to the stumps and Jenkins was put under instant pressure by the WGC fielders and bowling attack.

However the game quickly turned in Radlett’s favour with a flurry of boundaries coming from both Jenkins and Sandino-Taylor. WGC were forced to chase the ball to all parts as both batsmen set upon crucifying the WGC attack with some sumptuous powerplay. After 12 overs the score had rocketed to 89-1.

The introduction of spin stemmed the tide and brought WGC back into the game when Sandino-Taylor (55), Jenkins (30) and Berg (1) all fell to the WGC slow bowlers.

Burger was joined by Dungaria and the run rate shot back up as both men began to dominate the visitors. Burger was particularly impressive and produced one of the best innings seen at Cobden Hill producing every shot in the book in a flawless knock. Dungaria on, his home debut, looked in great touch before he unluckily chipped the ball to cover.

Crocker joined his captain and expertly survived an onslaught from a rejuvenated Hewitt and was still there when Burger drove to the boundary to secure the win with 11 overs to spare. Burger finished on 90 not out and such was his dominance that if the game was still going on you felt that he would be out there still batting “It’s vital to get a victory on the board and it was one of those days that we dominated the opposition. We threaten this at Slough last week and hopefully we can string a few wins together and get ourselves up the table and push for honours” added Burger.
