Radlett CC U9A v Tring Park on Tue 22 Jun 2004 at 6:00
Radlett CC Lost 1 run net
Match report
Radlett U9's unbeaten record came to a soggy end against Tring. Whilst the lack of 4 regular players undoubtedly had an effect, this was a game which should have been and very nearly was won.
Radlett lost the toss and having been put in suffered a shock with the Captain being bowled off the first ball of the innings.Only 18 runs were scored off the bat, despite the fact the Tring bowling was nothing to write home about.Seven wickets were lost-the most in any game this season, and top scorer was James Lawrence with 5. For most of the innings we could have brought the boundary in to the edge of the square and still not seen it threatened.
Having amassed a distinctly unpromising 210-7 the boys knew that they would have to bowl like demons to win and despite the wind and rain they produced probably the finest bowling performance of the season.James, Khalil Osman, Manaal Akhaney and Joe Lewis all bowled quicker than any player I have seen at this level and the Tring batsmen could do little else but block.
Manaal bowled a superb third over, taking 2 wickets and but for a lick of varnish could have had 2 more. Tring bobbed along behind the asking rate, surviving numerous close calls along the way. By the 15th over they had 219 and it seemed all over. Khalil then took 2 wickets in successive balls, the second a fine diving catch by debutant wicket keeper Ross Ferguson.Tring needed 8 to win off the last over and somehow they scrambled home-although the scorers thought it was a tie, Tring's manager recalled a bye run off a wide at the death and that was that.
This was a pulsating game and a spirited defence of a very low total. It also combined the best bowling performance with the most ill disciplined batting and some sloppy fielding. An exciting, frustrating and above all, damp evening.
