Letchworth CC v Radlett CC U12 on Wed 23 Jul 2008 at 6 pm
Radlett CC Lost 37 runs
Match report
The Under 12s season ended as, at the 4th attempt, Letchworth finally beat Radlett at this age group and gained revenge for last season's last over U11 final defeat. Both sides were weakened but Radlett more so .Joe Lewis was so sick he could not field with his place taken by 9 year old Ben.When Yiannis was injured we had 8 year old Freddie fielding for the last 8 overs. We also had 4 talented under 11s standing in.Considering the makeshift nature of the team I thought the boys deserved a lot of credit for fighting hard with the bat to post a respectable score of 133. Unfortunately that was well short as Letchworth had posted a mammoth 170-3,assisted by 34 wides which gave them nearly 5 extra overs.
Jonathan Midgen and Jack Cox deserve great credit for taking the responsibility of bowling 3 overs each, particularly with the pitch 2 yards longer than they were used to.Jonathan opened the bowling which says a lot about his temperament.Letchworth had some large and aggressive batsmen who feasted on anything too short or too full.In truth only when Will and Simeon combined did we exert any control or pose a threat. The last 3 overs were fairly painful watching as 47 runs were smashed.
With our youthful team we needed our senior batsmen to fire.Unfortunately,Udeepa and Fergus were bowled first ball and with Joe run out also for a duck and Jaimin unlucky to be given caught behind for 6 it was a miracle we came so close. In fact, we were ahead of the rate at 12 overs on 79 compared to Letchworth's 69. This was principally due to Will, who retired on 30 at better than a run a ball and 5 4s and Simeon who really stepped up to the plate with 25.Simeon has trained really hard this season and deserved his chance at number 3 after performing well at training on Monday night. One cut shot for 4 was superb-something to build on for next year.
Unfortunately, the batsmen who could have made Letchworth sweat were out early and despite game hitting from Yiannis and Jack the innings fizzled out.
The boys who played battled hard but were outgunned by a stronger team-its a shame after a long and disappointing season that the chance to progress to the final was lost as we had only 6 U 12s available for a quarter final.
