Match report Radlett stayed in third place among the Division Six pace-setters with their sixth win in seven games. Workmanlike cricket on an awkward pitch subdued dangerous opponents in St Albans, and victory was achieved with 2.4 overs to spare.

Jim Clarke grafted for his second fifty in two weeks, and this time he received ideal support not only from his team-mates but from extras, who contributed 22 byes and 15 leg byes. Paul Windmill opened fluently, Charlie Randall helped Clarke put on 63 for the third wicket and Matt Bell, with a rapid 35, added 67 for the fourth. Radlett’s first 200-plus innings of the summer was achieved against an accurate attack.

Radlett’s bowlers gave Albanians little chance of challenging as Jez Menzies produced his best form, his nagging medium-pacers snaring five top-order victims. When the home side tried to increase the tempo, wickets fell. Jamie Wells held a thrilling reaction slip catch to dismiss Coles for a hard-hit 45, Andrew Brant produced a good run-out and from 112 for three Albanians slipped to 136 for eight. Appropriately Clarke held the final catch at mid-on to seal the victory he had set up.

It was a satisfying return for Wells after his lay-off with a broken thumb, though his understudy Bell dislocated a finger in the field and Brant added to the injury list with a pulled hamstring. Radlett did drop five catches, their curse of the season, but the memory of Wells’s slip catch lingered, and the team’s overall performance was convincing.
