West Herts v Radlett CC Midweek XI on Thu 19 Jun 2008 at 6:00pm
Radlett CC Lost by 6 wickets
Match report
Defending champions West Herts will meet Harefield in the first Watford Observer Shield semi-final at Watford Town’s Woodside ground on Tuesday after edging a rollercoaster tie with Radlett by six wickets tonight.
Set a run-a-ball total of 113 for eight by the Home Counties Premier League Division One outfit, the Stags were cruising to the win after openers Craig Sanders and Will Jones had put on 84 without loss after seven overs.
By that stage though, Radlett had belatedly introduced Paul Barker, and when Sanders was caught in the deep for an impressive 42 off the spinner the complexion of the game began to change.
Rob Watson removed Jones for 36 in the ninth over and when Shaun Farrell was dismissed by Barker with the score on 94 the visitors to Park Avenue sensed they had a real chance.
Chaudhry was also removed by Watson (two for 20 off three overs), while Barker finished an excellent four-over spell with two for 19, but Stags skipper Matt Smith (12 not out) and Stephen Pich (four not out) then saw their side home with an over to spare.
The Cobden Hill outfit though, perhaps knew it was not going to be their night when their players were delayed by heavy traffic.
With only six present when the toss was made, they had little option but to bat after winning the toss and by the time king-pins Shane Burger and Kabir Toor had arrived 20 minutes after the game had started their team were already in trouble at 28 for four after five overs.
Wickets continued to fall to Ian Gurney (three for 28), whose love affair with the competition continues after he took a hat-trick in last year’s final, and Sanders (two for 25), but, crucially, Felix Walker remained unmoved.
Walker went on to make a superbly composed unbeaten 57 and in conjunction with Toor (nine) and Burger (13), who ultimately batted at nine, lifted his side to their closing total.
For half of the Stags’ reply it looked to be a very inadequate number, but by the end Radlett could definitely be forgiven for wondering what might have been if the roads had not forced their hand so significantly when batting.
