Radlett CC 4th XI v Cavendish on Sat 29 May 2004 at 1:30
Radlett CC Won 1 run
Match report
Radlett won this sensational game of ebb and flow at Cobden Hill by one run with plenty of overs remaining. At one stage they looked out of it, and later they seemed to have it sewn up until a Cavendish last-wicket stand of 26 almost snatched victory away.
Radlett scrapped intelligently for runs right down the order against an exceptional attack, and 165 looked defendable until the Hatfield visitors steamed off at a run a ball, intent on repeating another prolific innings. For Radlett the loss of skipper Jamie Wells with a broken thumb attempting a diving catch was another setback, but the introduction of Meepa to the attack changed the picture.
Meepa, a veteran returning after a four-year absence, bowled 19 overs, his nagging off-cutters strangling the run-rate and taking five wickets. From 68 for one, batsmen began to hole out in frustration. Vickit Kothari, the Kenyan medium-pacer thrust into the side that morning - he wanted to revise for his accountancy exams - supported him accurately, deserving his four wickets.
Jez Menzies took the catch of the season, running across to accept a skier at extra cover hoisted by Cavendish's key batsman. With Radlett suddenly well on top, the ninth wicket fell on 138, but the No 10 decided to hit Meepa out of the attack and connected well, riding his luck.
With four runs needed for victory, the tail-ender clipped Josh Rose straight to long-on where Toby Sutherland dropped the catch. One run. Over. Next ball he straight-drove Kothari for a likely four until Sutherland (switching from long-on to long-on) hurled himself to stop the boundary. One run scored and one to tie. Then the No 11 missed and the ball just flicked the side of his off-stump.
A great win for Radlett under Matthew Bell, the replacement captain. Sutherland, top scorer with the bat, then 32 runs off his four overs, then the dropped catch, finished a mental wreck...
