Sandridge v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 14 Aug 2004 at 1:00
Radlett CC Lost 22 runs
Match report
Another bitter reverse for the Thirds today, and probably the one that keeps us out of division four next year. Perhaps the most galling thing about this defeat was that it was our fielding, which has been our strongest suit this season, that cost us the match
It was a wicked wicket, which had been watered and worn by the withering weather. It had been rained on. And there is certainly no blame attached to the Sandridge groundsmen, but it was easily the most difficult surface we have experienced this season.
We won the toss and elected to bowl for a number of compelling reasons. Firstly a win was vital, and batting second makes it more possible, even though a gamble. The pitch looked damp, and we thought (wrongly) that batting second would be easier. Thirdly, we knew that Sandridge preferred to bat first, and indeed had for all but two games this year, so the theory of doing what your enemy doesn’t want you to do is always sound.
And the plan was working, when Sandridge were 57 for 7. Then we dropped three or four catches of the kind that we have been snaffling all season. They went on to make 132 instead of 80, and that proved vital.
Our bowling was very good with Ross Carpenter, Chris Brown and especially Ollie Robertson who took 6 for 31, outstanding, but were not, unfortunately, supported well enough by the catchers. Robertson’s caught and bowled, however, was spectacular.
Chasing 133 to win, not one of our batsmen can blame himself for getting out, as the ball popped one minute, and was almost subterranean the next. It is true to say that every other delivery brought up a puff of dust or a clod of earth. The correct approach was taken by Hardy, by choice, and Wright and John Crocker, by nature, and while the former two were at the wicket there was hope. They took the long handle effectively, but unfortunately we ended up 22 runs short.
Realistically, the chase for promotion is now off, so perhaps we can take heart from the fact that we can play the last three games without any pressure. Shame.
Well bowled Ollie Robertson, who bowled beautifully, and at last is getting some return after a lot of bad luck. His ten wickets in the last two matches more accurately reflect his talent.
