Millhillians II v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 12 Jun 2004 at 1:30
Radlett CC Won 9 wickets

Match report By 4 o’clock, Radlett 3rd XI were back in the changing room, having comfortably despatched Old Millhillians by nine wickets.

Radlett started with a very strong team, whereas Millhillians had terrible availability problems with no less than thirty players absent from selection. In a club with two sides that presents a serious problem. The home team could only muster ten men, and Radlett simply blew them away.

On a rock-hard pitch, Millhillians won the toss and elected to bat. The opening bowling combination of Tricker, with his explosive aggression, and the nagging accuracy of Paynter who is just a bit too quick to take liberties with, was irresistible. Paynter took three wickets at less than a run an over, while Tricker took the remaining six (ten men remember) with his blustering pace and frightening bounce.

Only two bowlers were used, and until Ingram was adjudged lbw with four runs to win, it looked as though only two batsmen would be needed. Mike Crocker batted with aplomb to remain unbeaten when the winning runs were hit.

But it was another excellent catching performance by Radlett that really caught the eye. For the second successive match Radlett caught everything on offer, with five catches pouched including good ones from Evans, Lewis and Simon Gray. Colin Warne had a good, compact game behind the stumps, and Radlett looked a good unit.

The downside of a win of such ease is that half the side don’t get a game, but this was the performance of a serious side who brushed aside a weakened team with the minimum of fuss. This places us clear third in the league, having played the two above and with four teams being promoted, so the signs are good for this team.

Following promotion Radlett have finished in the top six for the last two years, tantalisingly close to division four. The main factor in that promotion year is evident again now, and that is match-winning bowlers. With captain Tricker a handful on any wicket, and the fast maturing Carpenter, Radlett are capable of bowling sides out, more especially if they catch as well as they have done in the past couple of matches.

The season is still young, but this team is well placed and equipped to maintain or even better their current position, and spend next year in division four.
