Kings Langley II v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 15 May 2004 at 1:30
Radlett CC Won 5 wickets
Match report
Today saw the Third’s and Jon Tricker’s first win. Well done and well deserved. Better than that was that it saw a quantum leap for two of the Club’s most talented and enthusiastic young players. Mike Crocker scored a beautiful half century and looked a class above anyone other batter in the match, and Ross Carpenter bowled with intelligence and some pace to take 4 for 29, and set up the victory.
Kings Langley batted first, and were soon 27 for 4, after an excellent opening spell from Robertson and Tricker. As we expected, Tricker has added a real edge to the Radlett attack. Kings Langley’s two youngster Brazier and Joseph, who also opened the bowling, batted spiritedly to even up the game, and spectres of our last match, when 34 for 4 turned into 201 for 5, loomed.
It was Carpenter and the marvellously confrontational Mark Evans who took the last six wickets for just 40 runs. The fielding on the whole was good, with not one dropped catche. Oz Edwards took two excellent catches, and fielded like a twenty year old. His influence on side’s performance transcends his own contribution.
Tim Smithers whose body is currently held together with blue tack and elastoplast, kept wicket brilliantly. Smithers, together with Hardy, who is always looking for a fight, orchestrated a wonderful tragicomical scene originating from some ordinary umpiring (not from the man with the red socks). It ended with the whingeing batsman, a man old enough to know better, literally begging for protection from Hardy’s withering logic.
The author can say no more, having experienced litigious hubris from an estate agent that nobody in Radlett would have heard of.
Chasing 125, Ingram and Mike Crocker took the score past fifty with few alarms. After this worthy start, it was a surprise to see Ingram play an unworthy shot and throw away the hard work. The same could not be said of Crocker. He batted with a serenity beyond his years, with not one false shot, and never trying to hit the ball too hard.
When Crocker went, at 88 for 4 having reached his 50, progress became very slow, but it was Hardy who again saw the side home with a mature unbeaten 25.
This was a deserved win for Radlett, who look to have an extra resilience and tough edge with the current team make-up. This side will not lose many games, but will have to bat better if they are to win this league.
