Radlett CC 2nd XI v Ampthill Town on Sat 19 Jun 2004 at 1:30
Match was Drawn
Match report
On the back of a remarkable 300+ plus run chase the week before, the Radlett II entertained Ampthill Town’s finest on a cold and windy summer’s day at Cobden Hill.
Ampthill Town won the toss and elected to bat on a hard wicket that looked to be full of runs. Burchett and Paynter took the new ball for Radlett with Burchett beating the bat almost at will. Burchett also made the early breakthroughs ensuring Ampthill Town were firmly on the back foot from the outset.
The introduction of Hegarty reaped immediate rewards and when he also accounted for the Ampthill number 5 who scored 83 off only 62 balls faced as well as the prize wicket of former Radlett star Richard Haxell, Radlett looked to be firmly in control of the match. However the score went from 170/8 to 236/9 in the final overs courtesy of some clean hitting from the tail. Burchett finished with 3/74 off 20, while Hegarty returned his best figures to date this season of 4/47 off 15.
Chippeck and Robinson opened the Radlett run chase with Robinson adjudged leg before early on. In a remarkable twist, with team mates expecting to hear tales of another century thieved by a terrible umpiring decision, Robinson agreed that he was trapped in front. Soon after, Chippeck and Brendan “Hassellhoff / Knight Rider / Mitch Buchanan / Baywatch” Hutchings both joined Robinson in the early shower club and captain Matt Cousens joined Simon Gray, of no fixed address, in the middle to pick up the pieces of the Radlett innings.
Cousens and Gray both looked in control throughout their innings, playing all the shots along the way. Just when Radlett looked to be in control once more, Cousens was out for a well made 61. Jim Lewis followed soon after, torching himself trying to pick up a quick single. Sutherland and Paynter both followed soon after amid the mad scramble towards the target in the final overs. In the end Radlett were stuck on 221/7, a win being just out of our reach for having to chase 40 or 50 runs than we should have. The highlight of the day though was without a doubt Simon Gray putting on the best display of pure batting seen in the second XI this season to finish unbeaten on 90.
