Hemel Hempstead II v Radlett CC 2nd XI on Sat 22 May 2004 at 1:30
Radlett CC Won 10 wickets
Match report
Still looking for our first victory of the 2004 campaign, the Radlett second XI travelled to Hemel Hempstead, to a ground that will long be remembered (according to Robbo) for his blazing 60 not out in the Herts Cup Final of 1997, rather than Campbell Horlock’s scratchy 249 not out on the same day.
Perfect conditions greeted a Radlett team carefully combining old age and experience with youth and stupidity, along with 5 players not born in Her Majesty’s United Kingdom. I am told we won the toss and elected to field first, although I was not able to be there to do the honours, as I travelled to the ground with Freedman, forfeiting any hope of arriving at the ground more than 10 minutes before the first ball was due to be delivered.
The Radlett opening bowlers, Burchett and Paynter, each bowled disciplined spells, attacking the off stump and rarely giving away easy runs. As a direct result of this, the wickets came in many and varied forms. Some were bowled, others LBW, while others fell to brilliant acts in the field, namely Hanson and Smithers’ catches behind the wicket and Hegarty’s direct hit.
With 8 wickets down and the score not yet 100, young Oz Edwards and Hegarty were introduced into the attack in the hope of giving the Radlett top order a decent score to chase, although the former was having none of that and promptly wrapped the innings up. Burchett reaped the rewards of a hard pre season in the nets taking 5/39 while Paynter was equally as impressive taking 2 wickets while going for around 2 runs an over.
With only 92 runs required for victory, we declined to take afternoon tea, despite the sternest of protests from my belly. Robinson and Freedman then went out to open the Radlett innings and the game was won less than 10 overs later, with Freedman hitting a 27 ball 52 not out and Robinson contributing 35 not out at a run a ball including his first 6 in the league since Thatcher was the Prime Minister.
Afternoon tea was eventually taken, and what a delight it was. A wonderful selection of sandwiches and hot savouries complimented by cakes and chocolate bars. Or maybe it was the rare treat of enjoying a pint of lager at tea time which made all the difference. The answer to that is completely irrelevant, the fact that we were able to take our first lot of 30 points this year was what counted and hopefully is what kick starts a winning season. Though taking great satisfaction from having won the game by 4:30pm, it is with the value of hindsight that this scribe reflects that the longer such victories go on, the more likely his liver is to suffer a similar fate to that of George Best.
