Radlett CC 1st XI v Basingstoke & North Hants on Sat 17 Jul 2004 at 11:00
Match was Drawn

Match report Radlett fought back from a lowly position at halfway in this game to secure a creditable draw against fellow strugglers Basingstoke. Captain Nick Fielden led the way with 103 not out in Radlett’s response of 200-5. Basingstoke had earlier taken advantage of some loose Radlett bowling to post a big score of 294-5 off 62 overs.

The day had more promising beginnings for the Cobden Hill side after they had won the toss and chosen to bowl first on a pitch that had more than a hint of moisture in it. Stuart Browne and Shane Burger had opened the bowling and bowled with pace and purpose, removing the very dangerous Lee Nurse and his brother Dean within the first hour of play. Opener Ian Maynard remained though and he, with Ross Hunter, brought Basingstoke back into the game.

Radlett’s fortunes suffered after Burger completed his first spell to be replaced by Kervin Marc, the big fast bowler was still feeling the effects of a thigh injury and unable to bowl at full pace or effectiveness. Though Basingstoke took full advantage, Radlett felt very aggrieved not to have secured Ross Hunter’s wicket on 3 separate occasions. Two appeals for a catch behind and a stumping were all turned down off the bowling of Stuart Browne and that is possibly where the match turned. Though Maynard was out for 56, Hunter and Scott Dyer played very well and scored extremely quickly after lunch. Both were out just short of their hundreds though not before they had taken Basingstoke to a big score and an early declaration. The pick of Radlett’s bowlers were Browne with 3-68 and Burger with 2-36.

Radlett began steadily though the early loss of Matt Evans was not in their ideal game plan. Fielden and Burger batted well together before tea, however, and at the interval were 82-1 off 24 overs and still very much in the game. However, when Burger was dismissed for 39 and Graham Dill was out soon after, Radlett were suddenly struggling. This was particularly the case after Steve Lowe was forced to pull out with a virus and Haydn Smith was incapacitated due to a rib injury sustained playing for Hertfordshire. Fielden continued to play aggressively when the opportunities arose and along with Jim Chaudry took the score up towards 200. The 25 point opportunity had gone however with Basingstoke containing well. 8 Points was the home side’s reward and they’ll need bigger hauls than that if they are to remain in the IC3 HCPCL Division One.

Skipper Fielden said, ‘After the first hour we didn’t bowl well enough though you could argue we were extremely unlucky not to have had a couple more wickets by then and the situation could have been very different. It’s disappointing not to win but sometimes you have to settle for something less.’
