Radlett CC 1st XI v Reading on Sat 29 May 2004 at 11:00
Radlett CC Lost 14 runs

Match report Radlett slipped to a narrow defeat at Cobden Hill this week against a well drilled Reading side. In a closely fought encounter, the home side were bowled out for 228, fifteen short of their victory target and with a couple of overs remaining in the day.

Radlett had earlier done very well to restrict the Berkshire side to their total of 242 all out, particularly after the start they received from opener John Perkins and David Barr, batting at 3. After being inserted, they had dominated proceedings before lunch, though the Radlett bowlers will feel that they didn’t quite get the luck that their efforts had deserved. Shane Burger, in particular, beat the inside and outside edge numerous times but credit must be given to the two Reading batsmen for sticking to their task.

After Reading had placed themselves in a strong position to be 130-1 at lunch, Radlett’s bowlers struck back well in the post lunch session. Barr was caught of the bowling of Browne for 57 and Perkins was taken smartly by Haydn Smith off the bowling of young off-spinner Robbie Crocker. Crocker against impressed with his flight, control and turn and it was he along with Shane Burger and Stuart Browne who provided the cutting edge. Burger finally got his rewards, picking up 2 wickets and Browne returned to clean up at the end of the innings, the Reading tailenders blown away by his pace. Browne 4-54 Crocker 3-22 and Burger 2-58.

Having come back well and restricted Reading to a total of 242, this was a game Radlett will feel they should have won. They looked like doing just that until the last hour of play when Reading hauled their way back into the game. Nick Hampton (30) and Steve Lowe (38) had Radlett off to a great start though both will be disappointed that they did not convert good starts into substantial totals for themselves. Unfortunately 97-1 became 104-4 with 3 quick wickets either side of tea, but Haydn Smith and Jim Chaudry saw Radlett to within 60 of the victory target, batting extremely sensibly in a partnership of 76.

A disappointing run out was to end the partnership and Haydn Smith innings and after his dismissal Radlett were always struggling. His score of 31 and Chaudry with 33 were again examples of batsmen failing to convert good starts. Credit should be given to Reading however who juggled their bowlers extremely well, O’Sullivan (4-46) and Hartley (3-65) being the pick of them.

Nick Fielden, Radlett 1st team skipper said afterwards, ‘We didn’t win the game because we failed to convert good starts from our batsmen into big scores. We stuck to our game plan though and despite losing, this was probably our most positive game in the league this season. The result could easily have gone the other way.’
