Radlett CC 1st XI v High Wycombe on Sat 22 May 2004 at 11:00
Match was Drawn

Match report Radlett earned a draw at home on Saturday against High Wycombe, last season’s Home Counties Premier League Champions. In a hard fought game, both sides were happy to take away some well earned bonus points, though it does leave both clubs still searching for their first league win of the season.

Nick Fielden won the toss and asked Jason Harrison’s side to bat first on a dry pitch but in conditions where the ball would be given every chance of swinging around. And swing it did for Kervin Marc and Shane Burger, Radlett’s opening pace attack. High Wycombe were quickly reduced to 14-2 with Marc picking up both wickets in a good first hour for the Hertfordshire side. High Wycombe fought back well though with Jason Harrison and Greg Pooley consolidating their position to be 75-2 at lunch.

By this stage Stuart Browne had entered the attack after a week off with injury and he continued in the post lunch session, very accurately as per usual. He ultimately went unrewarded though, as did the unfortunate Paul O’Reilly who also used the conditions well without much reward. It took the introduction of 20 year old off-spinner Robbie Crocker to ultimately break up High Wycombe’s best batting combination, Harrison top edging a sweep for 85 and Pooley caught behind for 88. Crocker also snared Paul Sawyer for 7, leaving him with 3-61, figures that were distorted by some big hitting in the final overs from Wright who ended up 40 not out.

Radlett had a healthy target of 270 to win and right from the start this looked a long way off. High Wycombe’s tactics of squeezing the run rate by using the old ball and the very tight bowling of Sketchley and Wood ruff never allowed Radlett to get of to a flyer. With pressure building, Hampton was run out by some good work from Pooley at backward point and Dill padded up to his second ball only to be bowled, leaving Radlett struggling on 10-2. Fielden and Evans saw their side through to tea but the run chase was all but lost.

Radlett’s innings had been disrupted by the temporary loss of their high class number 3, Steve Lowe, who has to rush to hospital for stitches beneath his eye after a blow in the face while keeping wicket earlier in the day. Fielden (24) and Evans (20) lost their wickets to 2 poor shots off Sketchley and it was Haydn Smith and Steve Lowe who played the required roles for the home side on the day. Both left handers made batting look a lot easier than any had before, though the 270 required was never a serious proposition after the poor start to the Radlett innings.

Radlett ended up 200-5, Steve Lowe 76 not out and Haydn Smith 58, Radlett taking 8 points and High Wycombe, 11 points. Radlett Skipper said, ‘The crucial period for us was when they were under pressure at 14-2. With their two best players at the crease, a couple more wickets then and we would have been facing a much lower total to chase. It’s not back to the drawing board but we do have some areas to work on.’
