Basingstoke & North Hants v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sat 15 May 2004 at 11:00
Match was Drawn

Match report Radlett opened their league season last Saturday with the better half of a draw over at Basingstoke. Having won the toss, Skipper Nick Fielden decided to take the opportunity to bat first on a pitch that had all the hallmarks of a typically slow and low early season strip.

The Herts side started slowly and it was Fielden who was first to go for 10, bowled by South African Test Bowler Charl Willoughby. Steve Lowe and Matt Evans soon followed him back to the pavilion and at 70 for 3, Radlett were desperately in need of a partnership. Nick Hampton and Haydn Smith threatened to provide this but Hampton was out just before lunch for 42 to leave Radlett 90-4 at the break.

The post Lunch session belonged to Radlett though with South Africans Haydn Smith and Shane Burger leading the way initially. They added 62 for the 5th wicket before Smith holed out after a fluent 42. Radlett then showed the benefits of batting all the way down to 11 because although Chaudry and Dill failed, Kervin Marc played a magnificent role in the last 10 overs to push Radlett towards a sizeable total. His 57 off 28 balls included 2 massive sixes (the second of which carried approximately 160 yards) and must be described as one of the most remarkable club innings ever witnessed in the HCPL. Burger also found the boundaries near the end in his contribution of 57 and Radlett were happy with their total of 262 for 8 off 65 overs.

Bowling Basingstoke out was going to need Radlett’s bowlers near their best and some good fortune. The pace attack of Marc and Burger started well with Marc picking up Maynard and Morris very cheaply. Lee Nurse was always going to pose Radlett’s biggest problem though and once he was set, it was difficult to see him getting out without making a substantial contribution. Burger and Paul O’Reilly kept firing away though and success did come with a wicket a piece to leave Basingstoke 71-4.

The introduction of off-spinner Robbie Crocker saw the downfall of Lee Nurse though not before he had made 73 and taken the score up to 140-5. With the ball much older and the pitch ever slower, Radlett struggled for penetration from that point. Burger did pick up two more wickets but despite the best efforts of the Radlett attack, the Herts side was unable to secure the victory. Although disappointing, skipper Nick Fielden was happy with the all round performance and happy to walk away with 13 points from a possible 25, ‘It would have been nice to start with a win but I can’t fault the side for trying. All the bowlers had their moments and with the rub of the green, we could have got there. We’re definitely looking forward to next weeks’ clash with Champions High Wycombe and the rest of the season to follow.’
