Rickmansworth II v Radlett CC 4th XI on Sat 16 Jul 2016 at 1:00 pm
Radlett CC Lost by 5 wickets

Match report A comparison of the two teams' scores at 5 wickets down tells the story of the match and, to a large extent, the story of the season so far: Radlett 117, Rickmansworth 2s 100. Once again, the 4s lack of depth in batting compared to the opposition cost them the game.

Put into bat, openers Colin Warne and Hiren Patel played nicely, scoring at over 4 an over despite the extremely slow outfield, and it was a surprise when Warne played an indeterminate shot to play on for 26 in the 13th over. Patel followed in the 16th over, trying to cut a low ball from the left-arm spinner off middle-stump, and debutant Chris Stevens two overs later, bowled trying to smash the same spinner over mid-wicket. 78-3 soon became 82-4 when Sarath Parayil was bowled for 25.

Shon Alisha had announced his intentions with a first-ball hit for 4 and continued in his usual attacking vein, partnered by Charlee Eve-Raw. When the latter was bowled for 10, he was replaced by Nav Sidhu, another 4s debutant, who looks to be just the sort of player the 4s has missed - a mature, more-than-competent cricketer. He and Alisha had moved the score along rapidly to 156, when the latter changed his mind about a quick single and Sidhu was run out as he slipped trying to turn back.

156-6 rapidly became 176 all out, but the score was worth considerably more on such a slow outfield.

Amy Price conceded early runs, as did the first three overs of her replacement, Parayil, the score racing to 64 before the latter struck in the 13th over. Young Dylan Gunasekera came on to replace the tidy Sidhu and got substantial turn, removing the nr 1 for 43 in his fourth over. Paratyil then bowled the nr 3, a run-out saw off the nr 4 and Gunasekera caught the nr 5 at deep mid-on (in unusual fashion, dropping the ball onto his boot and catching the rebound), leaving Ricky on 100-5.

The drinks break changed everything. The original ball had been lost in the 18th over, but for some reason the bowlers decided they did not like the replacement and a change for a newer-looking version was agreed. Mistake! Gunasekera found the newer, shinier one hard to grip and, having had figures of 1-31 off 9, conceded 26 off his next three overs, as the harder ball flew off the bat. The score shot from 103 in the 27th over to 177 in the 35th and another game that was eminently winnable had been lost.
