Pirton v Radlett CC 5th XI on Sat 06 Sep 2008 at 12.30 P.M.
Match was Drawn
Match report
Oliver Jackson hit his maiden league fifty at the age of 16 as Radlett V ended their Division 11 season with a dominant draw at Pirton.
After Charlie Randall had decided to bat first on a well prepared, soft pitch Jackson and Hemal Malde, 17, batted Radlett into an almost unassailable position, and their scores would have been much higher if the outfield had not been so lush and shaggy after so much rain.
Jackson pushed the ball into the gaps for a string of ones and twos, supported first by Matt Barrett, in his last match before his move to Shrewsbury School, and then by Malde, who began to collar the bowling in tandem.
Though the Pirton attack was accurate rather than menacing, momentum at a steady rate was very tricky to achieve, and Jackson's play provided evidence of his maturing talent. Malde, as expected of a Haberdashers first-teamer, used his power sensibly to spread the field. Radlett hardly missed their senior batsman Mayur Hindocha, who arrived an hour late after being caught in an M1 traffic jam.
Radlett failed to achieve a deserved victory, even though Malde's direct hit run-out claimed the the eighth Pirton wicket with about 14 overs remaining. Three dropped catches proved crucial, but this was a very encouraging Radlett display against a useful village first team.
Pirton's run chase seized up quickly when Vikram Rajput clean bowled three men. John Mansell bowled two others and had another victim caught at slip, Randall rolling back the years with a sharp take. Barrett claimed the other wicket when Rajput held a catch over his head at midwicket and tumbled backwards. The pit he left on the outfield would probably require a major civil engineering contract to rectify. Brendan Jones enjoyed his longest spell of the season -- and unluckiest.
After a lean start to the season Radlett finished comfortably in mid-table with cause for optimism for next year.
