Match report THE immediate past Mayor of Hertsmere made a surprise appearance at the Radlett V game against Welwyn Garden City IV at Queens' School, Bushey, and his VIP presence seemed to inspire a batting revival without leading to victory in Division 11.

Radlett were beaten by five wickets, but not before they had consumed a delicious tea, complete with VIP jam scones and cream, prepared and delivered by Councillor Martin Saunders and his wife Jane, helping out as club members.

When they arrived, Radlett had slipped to 35 for six with an unaccountable series of odd dismissals against a tidy attack, but Mayur Hindocha, with an excellent 35 not out, produced a recovery to 120 with tail-enders Matt Barrett, Vikram Rajput and Brendan Jones.

Rajput followed up by clean bowling a WGC opener in his first over, but former WGC first-teamer Andy Emerton batted solidly for a match-winning 70. Dan Cohen bowled Emerton with the score on 119 and bowled the next man first ball to improve Radlett's bonus points tally for a consolation of sorts.

Emerton survived scares, not least a run-out mix-up that left him yards short after Cohen's clean pick-up and shy that narrowly missed the stumps, but Radlett simply did not have enough runs on the board.

Radlett's batting had perhaps been a little complacent after several weeks of big scores. Andy Griffiths somehow edged a ball hitting down on a drive and Charlie Randall tapped a full toss back to the bowler off a leading edge. Then Josh Charles was run out in a misjudgement, sixth out. The recovery ran out of steam when Barrett was caught in the gully off pad and wrist, sportingly 'walking' when he decided the ball had touched some material.

With one game left, Radlett can look back on a strong second half to their season and a safe mid-table place after their slow start to their campaign.
