Hertingfordbury 11 v Radlett CC 5th XI on Sat 28 Jun 2008 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 20 runs
Match report
A motor accident on the way to the match robbed Radlett V of their opening batsman Shabbir Foyez before they had even arrived at Hertingfordbury II. A collision with a speedng van at Cobden Hill ruled him out of the match as he left the Radlett ground. Foyez was unhurt, though he had to remain with his damaged car, and umpire Bernie Soffair enthusiastically filled in as a player.
The day had a happy ending. Captained by Charlie Randall for the first time, Radlett won by 20 runs with nine balls to spare and moved towards the middle of Herts League Division 11, a welcome comeback from the 10-wicket hiding at Codicote the previous week.
Hertingforbury's ground had classic village beauty, with the adjacent medieval church, stately trees, green meadows, rustic pavilion and manicured outfield. It would not have seemed quite so glorious without a well deserved victory, but the declaration of 227-2 after 41 overs forced the home side to give serious chase with 49 overs on offer.
This was not a strong Radlett side, but every player made a contribution, none more than the veteran Soffair, who threw himself around alertly in the field. Former first-teamer Andy Griffiths, back at the crease after a 12-year break, punished anything loose in his brisk 81. Sahil Shah, 16, filling in for Foyez as opener, batted through for 77 not out, a maiden league fifty.
Hertingfordbury's reply faltered against Vikram Rajput, who clean-bowled three upper order batsmen. The long run chase continued, but the batsman began to feel the pressure, with Shah adding a run-out with a strong boundary throw.
Brendan Jones, with more dibble than dobble, intervened at a critical moment by bowling a determined tail-ender and then ending the match. The only blot for Radlett was a plague of dropped catches, at least six, and, as one of the ironies of cricket, the men who contributed most to the victory were among the guilty ones.
