Wormley v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 30 Aug 2008 at 1.00 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 5 wickets

Match report BRIEF SYNOPSIS BEFORE WILLIAM "DINGRAM" SHAKESPEARE PENS THE FULL VERSION

Iain Edwards team score a convincing win against an always competitive Wormley side, thanks to a sparkling bowling performance from Prabs Armageddon and Chippy Carpenter, backed up by a good fielding performance and a very good innings from Shame it Nathwani.

Eddo lost the toss and at 50-0 it looked as if a long hard slog was expected in the field but Prabs and Chip bowled superbly, backed up by some astute captaincy from Eddo and good ground fielding from Radlett.

At 98 -3 in the 30th over a big Wormley score looked on as their Aussie, SIms threatened to add a big score to his 850 runs already scored in the league, until Neel Malde took a fantastic running over the shoulder catch. What we did not know was that the end was but 8 overs away as Dr Prabs administered some medicine with the cherry by clean bowling all his victims. Worley collapsed to 113-9 with number 11 Aylott, lost in Brent Cross Car Park. He arrived as we were walking off the field for ea at 3.18.

After tea Ding "Fill" Fawlty and Malde M opened up but things did not go our way as Neel was adjudged LBW and Basil was run out in Fawlty Towers style as Shame It went for a third as Fill completed his 1st. Shame It must remember Basil is old enough to be his grandfather.

Rather than let his head go down Shame and Zeddly batted really well (When Shame allowed Zed a hit as Shame received 32 consecutive balls). Shame scored a mature 43 and Zed a hard hit 27 before they both went within 5 balls of each other. Tuney went without singing and MOM Prabs and the returning Deep Sea Fisherman Ningram saw Radlett home after a little scare.

A fantastic win by Radlett orchestrated by senior conductor Eddo sees us safe and maybe an outside chance of a top 8 finish.

Now, the official version:

The opposition umpire asked me what sort of season Radlett had experienced this year. My answer was that all sides were mid-table. Sounds ordinary, except when you factor in `

I can confidently report to you that the 3rd XI are playing a standard of at least that of our 2nd XI of ten years ago.

We have all moved up a team, and the 3rd XI, promoted two years ago, struggled last season, as they would, but are now firmly established in division 4 of 14 divisions. We play good sides and compete, and today prevailed, against a competent Wormley side who had had realistic thoughts of promotion.

Eddo lost the toss and, on a patchy looking wicket, was asked to bowl. As it turned out, this was to Radlett’s advantage, since the wicket actually improved through the day.

But the first rounds firmly belonged to Wormley, as a solid opening partnership of 50 at 3 an over brought in Wormley’s talented overseas bat, who, averaging 80 from 800 runs, looked capable of walking away with the game.

Skipper Eddo Edwards brought Dr. Prabs Arumugam into the attack, who as a new house doctor, had obviously had no sleep, having had to minister to the needs of patients (and nurses) until the early hours. Ross Carpenter had all the time bowled with composure but no success. Prabs took the first 3 wickets, but when Carpenter had the Australian caught, quite brilliantly, by Neil Malde, it was 98 for 4 from 30 overs.

Seven overs later, Wormley were all out for 113. Prabs 5-33, and Carpenter 18.2-7-33-4, after 0-22 from his first 12 overs. This was probably our best bowling performance of the season. The fielding, led by another wonderful performance from keeper Colin Warne, was aggressive and skilful under the hot sun.

Batting, with 114 to get in over 60 overs, we made hard work of it. With Neil Malde playing across a straight one, and Dom Ingram run out, Shamit and Zed put on 70 without a problem, but got out together, and when Nick Tune was bowled by a beauty, Nick Ingram and Prabs finished the job with over 30 overs left, to complete a significant win that places this side with a firm footing to push on at this level next season.

Excellent captaincy supported by superb bowling and a purposeful team ethos brought a win and a position thought impossible even five years ago.

I reckon we’ll the next one as well. Any bets?
