Match report Radlett 3rd XI v Watton-on-Stone Away 16th August 2008

After two weeks of no cricket, Radlett drew this match against Watton, scoring 216 for 8 after 53 overs and limiting Watton to 202 for 9.

But these statistics in no form convey the drama and excellence of the cricket in what proved to be one of the most entertaining and memorable games of this or any other season.

Watton put us in, and after Ingram was surprisingly dismissed having looked comfortable, for 22, Radlett were in trouble on 41 for 3. Edwards put Gitay in at no 5 to join Simon Gray. Gray had been suffering from Artois Syndrome, a chronic inability to pass any kind of lager on any given Friday night, resulting the following day in impaired vision and a propensity to speak gibberish.

Gitay bullied the bowlers, putting on 65 in 10 overs with the invalid Gray, 42 from his own bat. Edwards joined Gray to add important runs, and Hassit Mehta caught the eye with a marvellously improvised 20 at a run a ball.

All the while Gray batted with patience, panache and not a little power, to be run out selflessly for 85 in the last over. This was a truly mature innings from a quite rightly much maligned player, but which formed the backbone of the innings, and cannot be underestimated.

Josh Rose and Colin Warne ended with a flourish, Warne hitting the last ball of the innings straight, into the hedge, and we finished 216 for 8, which was at least defendable.

Watton’s strength is in their batting, and any their first five batsmen are capable of winning a match single-handed.

Thus when Amurugam had their opener well caught behind by Warne, and a slick run out by Mehta saw Watton on 24 for 2, we felt well in the game. The next pair put on 65, looking totally untroubled, and playing some beautiful shots.
Teddy Edwards brought on the new ball, which only seemed to make it easier for the batsmen, but Lloyd Paternott pouched a scorching catch above his head, 89-3, and after a period of consolidation with Watton needing 105 from 14 overs Edwards brought back the spinners.

Mehta was immediately hit for 6,6,4,1,6, and shortly the run rate had reduced just over 5 an over from the last 9 overs. Edwards bravely kept the spinners on, and even had a hard chance dropped, but a powerful victory seemed inevitable to players and spectators alike. Prabs and Hassit neither agreed nor lost their nerve, and when Ross Carpenter held onto a catch that almost knocked him off his feet, they bowled, as they have all season, with aplomb, and together with some quite brilliant fielding, led by the irrepressible Rose and Carpenter, and of course the excellence of Warne’s keeping, brought this powerful side to 202 for 9 at the end of their 47 overs.

Watton, as well as being a vastly entertaining side, and not just in a cricketing sense, are certainly well capable of existing comfortably in a higher league, and to have come within a whisper of beating them speaks volumes for the character for this Radlett side, and in no small way due to the acuity and bravery of Teddy Edwards as captain.
