Hertingfordbury v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 12 Jul 2008 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won Radlett won by 52 runs

Match report Radlett 3rds won their fourth consecutive game today. This news is great, but must be taken in the context of four losses in the first four games, bottom of the table, zero confidence, and alickadoos muttering phrases like “they’re a league too high” and “a bit out of their depth”.

This news is therefore sensational, also considering that if the 3rd XI had not dramatically won their last game of 2007, they actually would have been playing a league lower today.

Why?

As usual, it’s never one simple answer, but if it had to be, the answer would be “teamwork”. Today, in common with the three previous victories, we have had contributions from every player. After all, is cricket not a team game?

Ian Edwards is a canny and experienced captain, who has frequently stated his belief that there is little difference between all the sides in this division. That’s tough to believe when you’re getting beat, but his personality and acumen have made it a fact. Radlett have beaten three of the top six teams.

The story of the game is that Edwards lost the toss and Radlett were put in to bat. We were bowled out for 153, seemingly insufficient. The innings was made up of an excellent 29 from Dom Ingram ended by a puerile swipe, Amjad Khan back to his imperious best with 34, similarly ended, and a brilliant 28 from the powerful bat of Josh Rose from 14 balls. But all the batsmen chipped in, and all 53 overs were used.

This total seemed to your author to be woefully insufficient, yet Hertingfordbury were bowled out for 101, with four overs to spare.

This was achieved by some great captaincy, bringing together a marvellous team performance that will be remembered for a long time.

Eddo opened the bowling with Hassit and Zed Gitay with the old ball. No immediate advantage followed, but a wicket from a top edge from Hassit and a run out saw Hertingfordbury 65 for 2 at the required rate. Then when Ross Carpenter took over from Zed there were maiden overs, pressure, another run out, and finally the unlikely victory. Hassit finished with 4-36 from 19 overs, Ross supplied fabulous pressure and took a couple, Josh came on and could have had two wickets, and Zed came back to take the last two wickets in consecutive balls.

The fielding was, overall, excellent, and although everything in the garden is not rosy, it’s a damn sight better than five weeks ago.
