Radlett CC 3rd XI v Ampthill Town 11 on Sat 05 Jul 2008 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 33 runs
Match report
Another Saturday where the rain is falling when the curtains are open. As normal the cricket match at Radlett will start on time or 3 minutes late in this case.
Eddo wins what seems like his 375th consecutive toss and confirms What a good tosser he is!! Ampthill, captained by former Radlett stalwart Richard Haxell take to the field with a very good opening attack, a quick bowler and a giant 17 year old, modelled on Matt Johnson. Runs are hard to come by for Tillett and Mark Gray (who took his brother's place) and both are out before the score is 20. Amjad Khan is joined by Vishal Patel who has returned from Uni, looking very trim but with a very dodgy haircut.
The bowling is tight and from one end quick and when Haxell comes on for the 17 year old Eddie Sharpe, vey wily. After a fiery spell from Steele, Degnan producesa good tight spell and eventually Radlet get to 90 but the over are running away. At 92, Vishal is stumped by the impressive Howson from Martin Wythe having played 26 shots before the ball arrives and Zed gets out trying to force the pace too quickly.
Eddo comes in and produces a fabulous partnership with Amjad, pushing little singles, hitting the increasingly regular bad balls and just being assertive in the field. At 148 Amjad goes caught and bowled, but this brings in Tuney who plays with gay abandon and smashes a lovely cover drive, a fantastic cut and a wonderful straight drive before Eddo and Tuney are out in quick succession.
174 looks OK but still below par on an increasingly flat wicket but Josh Rose and Ben Charles have other ideas with Ben taking 10 off the last 3 balls from Degnan to bring up 200 and 10 batting points.
Amjads innings had held the innings together and was even better considering that he had been felled by a quick bouncer from Steele. Ampthill never gave up in the field and had two young stars in Keeper Howson and young Tom South, who was razor sharp in the field.
After tea Degnan and Farley took up the fight against Hasit Mehta and Ross Carpenter and scored against Ross but Hasit sent down 4 consecutive maidens.
As last week the batters went off like steam trains with Degnan beng very aggressive and Farley plying the anchor. Josh as last week started the rot with a brutal rising delivery that Jez Degnan gloved to a grateful Ben Charles. 53-1 became 54 -2 as Zed got a sharp outside edge which Ben did really well to hold. Hax and Farley took the attack to the Radlett bowlers and Ross came back to nab Haxell and Ruddick.
At 100-4 Amthill still looked set for a win and then it happened, Eddo opened his Merlin's hat and with young Nathan Howson looking as if he could win it for Ampthill, Eddo turns to Hasit and Rosey. Josh and Hasit turn the game inside 6 deliveries as 3 wickets fall for 0 runs and suddenly the gme is back in Magicman's hand.
With Martin Wythe batting with a damaged finger, and Josh not being able to hit the stumps, Josh suggets Ross bowls and three balls later the stumps are hit and Radlett have won again, against some delightful opponents, who played the game in exactly the right spirit andwe hope that they survive the drop.
A good finish wit some strong team performaces, but I am giving man of the match to Iain Edwards for the way he handled his bowlers and his kept his team going. Amjad Khan also deserves mention, as does Hasit for really keepng it tight.
Roll on next week and see if we can keep it going.
