Redbourn v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 21 Jun 2008 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Won by 36 runs
Match report
Radlett 3rds beat the league leaders, deservedly, today, producing an excellent team performance which has brought some welcome relief to their parlous league position.
Cricket, they say, is played in the head. Thus a team like Radlett, who had lost 4 of their first 6 games, playing against the top side, who had won 5 of their first 6, wouldn’t get great odds with the Eagles’ betting company.
We believe that we have been bit unlucky and that there isn’t that much difference between any of the sides in this division.
But now the question you have got to ask yourself, Punk, is do you really believe that?
Radlett believed and won. There were no heroes, but you have to pick out the guys who were brought up from the lower teams. Nick Tune and Toby Sutherland epitomise the strength in depth that the club possesses, batting and fielding superbly.
Eddo won the toss and batted. When Dom Ingram was out for 21 at 36 for 3, it looked grim, but Simon Gray batted with discipline and yes, maturity, to top score with 55. As a measure of this innings’ worth, it contained but 2 boundaries. Tune, Fortis, Sutherland and Oz Edwards all contributed to total 172 after 53 overs.
Eddo’s tactics proved successful, opening with the new ball, and Hassit Mehta taking the vital first 2 wickets. When Josh Rose joined Lee Fortis with the new ball, he changed the game with two consecutive unplayable deliveries which each brought wickets.
Apart from Rose’s brilliant fielding and inane but positive vocal input, his return to line and length in the last two games has been vital. Two run-outs, both involving Eddo and some quite beautifully intimidating bowling from Fortis (4-41 from 19 overs) brought a victory in the penultimate over with Sutherland’s catch, by 35 runs.
A good team performance against a proper side, excellent captaincy in difficult situations, and great performances from the “stand-ins” Sutherland and Tune, Oz Edwards’ fabulous aggression and refusal to come second, moulded with Gray’s patient and essential half-century, the only one of the game, to give Radlett a much needed victory.
This is either breathing space for Radlett 3rds, or a staging post to kick on to a late rush for possible promotion.
It’s not impossible, it’s a game played in the head.
