Radlett CC 3rd XI v Chipperfield on Sat 14 Jun 2008 at 1.30 p.m.

Match report
A disappointing game for the Thirds last Saturday, but this time for the right reasons.
Radlett played all the cricket in this drawn game, and although they couldn’t force the win, finished with 15 points and the confidence of knowing that they were much the better side.
The last quarter of the game was banal and pointless, with Chipperfield spurning the opportunity of victory after their top order batsmen were dismissed by some very good Radlett cricket.
The match revolved around a staggering innings by Lee Fortis, who turned the game on its head with an innings of skill and power, making 82 not out from 58 balls of controlled muscularity. He hit straight and hard and clean, turning 132 -6 to 242 for 6, in a century partnership in which his captain contributed but 20 intelligent runs.
Eddo won the toss, and decided to bat first, given the shortcomings of previous weeks’ batting.
On a pitch more benign than expected, Radlett, after losing Simon Randall early, prospered, mostly due to a belligerent 35 from the sublimely talented Shil Patel. Dom Ingram stuck around, but the middle order failed again, and after Ingram was out for a gritty but valuable 50, Radlett looked like failing to reach 200, which was base camp.
Then Fortis joined Ian Edwards, and while Edwards nurdled, Fortis smote, and these two put Radlett into the unlikely position of a declaration after 51 overs, setting the opposition 243 from a generous 49 overs on this easy and getting easier batting wicket.
And the bowlers came out like caged lions, Josh Rose produced his best this season, and some, as he constantly beat the bat caused problems. Fortis showed his skill and intelligence, after having been hit off the front foot for two fours, bounced out the Chipperfield striker, and thenceforth, at 60 for 3 with a quarter of the game to play, the game descended into farce, as Ian Edwards tried to entice the opponents into aggression, with spin bowling and attacking fields.
But at the end having suffered an hour and a half of pointless tedium, Radlett walked off the field having taken five wickets, and Chipperfield 50 runs short. And when the customary shaking hands between the teams took place, where was Chipperfield’s hero? Gone home of course, like any good team player.
Disappointing yes, but discouraging no. This team has its best to come.
