Match report Radlett 3rd XI v W. Herts 2nd XI 31/5/08

In a day of extraordinary games for Radlett, our Third Eleven did not disappoint.

It was humid and overcast, with a damp strip, so winning the toss meant that you want to bowl first. No, I wasn’t sure why either, but it’s apparently because the wicket will be slow and difficult to score on, and later be quicker and runs will be easier, and getting wickets more difficult.

Thus winning the toss was crucial, and, in retrospect, had we won the toss, we would, in my view, certainly have won this game.

We drew the game, but the story of the match was more than interesting.

Batting first, we did what we do best, which is lose early wickets unnecessarily. Ashley Tillet hit 12 from his first 8 deliveries on this slow wicket, then Shil Patel hit 25 at almost a run a ball. Champagne cricket on a brown ale wicket. At the other end was Dom Ingram, on 3 not out at 40 for 2 from 12 overs.

If these stroke makers can stay in for an hour, they will win a game for us, but that hasn’t happened so far this season, and they both perished to poor shots. Ingram grafted for 21, then Prabs got some, Eddo a first baller, and Lee Fortis batted well again with Amjad, unluckily run out when he could/should have taken us up to 200, being the classiest player in the side.

But with a side that bats to the end, we still only managed 149 all out from 52 overs, probably 20 short of what we wanted as a minimum.

When we bowled, Lee Fortis was almost unplayable, even when the wicket was drying, but with a couple of missed catches, W. Herts became 90 for 2 chasing 150, with 25 overs left.

Thoughts then were that the pattern was exactly the same, ie we bat, make too few runs, then get beat. But a funny thing happened. Lee Fortis and Prabs bowled a few maidens, pressure built, lofted shots became catches, and they were all of a sudden 118-7. Then many maiden overs even made the run rate look difficult.

From a Radlett viewpoint this was a vindication of some good sharp fielding, Josh Rose and Simon Gray outstanding, and Lee Fortis bowling superbly, on another day could have taken 8 wickets. Prabesh Aberystwyth and Josh Rose also beat the bat consistently, and Ross Carpenter was unlucky not to get wickets.

From the W. Herts point of view, which is not what I am here to give, their two 12 year olds batted with courage and determination to steer them to a pointless draw.

If you put the opposition in, you must force a win. A draw is useless, in fact less so, as the points system enforces.

Some improvement here, but we will really have to apply some gumption if we are not to get relegated this season.
