Northampton Exiles v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 03 May 2008 at 1.30 p.m.
Radlett CC Lost by 5 wickets

Match report The first game of the season is always difficult, as we shoehorn our winter-softened bodies into dusty white(ish) trousers and try to remember how, and indeed why, we play cricket.

The trick of course is to be mentally and physically prepared, and hit the ground running. We all knew this and that we would have to play “smart” cricket, as skipper Teddy Edwards so correctly put it. This we singularly failed to do.

Edwards won the toss and batted. We soon lost Hanif, bowled playing an expansive drive having looked solid. Dom Ingram and debutant Scott John then played well to take the score to near 50, after which six wickets fell for 40 runs, and it took a spirited last wicket partnership of 30 between opening bowlers Josh Rose and Ross Carpenter to raise the total to 134 from 52 overs.

This was actually defendable on a slow outfield and wicket, that had absorbed a lot of rain during the week, but that’s not the point. Apart from Amjad Khan getting a brute of a delivery, every other wicket to fall was a soft and unnecessary wicket. Patience and application were required, not even great technique and rasping power and skill, just good sense.

Yet we still had a chance to redeem ourselves. Ross Carpenter bowled beautifully and got that vital early wicket in the first over. We then managed to miss five catches and our opportunity to win the game. When Z Gitay came on to bowl with Carpenter, the runs dried up for Northampton, and Radlett got back into the match, but the dropped catches and some bad luck took the game away from us.

The Exiles prevailed by 5 wickets with 4 overs to spare, and credit must be given to them for the spirit in which they play the game as well as actually playing more sensibly than us.

On the plus side, Colin Warne kept wicket beautifully pouching two smart chances and diving round like a man half his age, which still wouldn’t be very young. Ross Carpenter bowled extremely well, and almost right through, to take three of the five wickets and was well supported by the wily Gitay. The newcomer Scott John is a lively presence, and both batted and bowled with gusto and talent.

Teddy Edwards had a good game as captain, but frankly was not backed up by a sensible team performance.

This is early days true enough, but after the struggle of last season, this side, which was actually strong for this stage, will have to use its resources much more cleverly than it did last Saturday if an end-of-season scramble is to be avoided.
